Proprioception is your body’s ability to sense its position and movement in space, even without visual cues.
It involves specialised sensory receptors – proprioceptors – that monitor the stretch, tension, and position of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints.
Want to try it?
Stand with your eyes closed and move your arms.
Can you tell where they are?
That’s proprioception in action!
Proprioceptors send vital information from the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) to the Central Nervous System (CNS), as shown in the image below.
Blue lines: Sensory fibres relaying information to the CNS (brain and spinal cord).
Pink lines: Motor fibres sending signals back to skeletal muscles, glands, and viscera (including the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems).
Why does this matter for Bowen Therapy?
Bowen moves target these proprioceptors, delivering signals that "override" the body’s perception of tension, pressure, and muscle stretch.
The result? Relaxation of the tissues involved, leading to:
• Postural realignment
• Regulation of the Autonomic Nervous System
• Fascial release
• And a boost to the body’s innate healing mechanisms.
Proprioception is explored in Module 10 of the Diploma. Join us in 2025!
