Eye Safety at Protests: When to Go to the ER and How to Reduce Risk

Eye injuries can be serious and time-sensitive. Not every emergency room has an ophthalmologist available, so knowing when and where to seek care matters.

Go to the Emergency Room immediately if:

• You were hit in the eye by something sharp or high-speed, such as a rubber bullet or gas canister

• You have eye pain, vision loss, or bleeding inside the eye after blunt trauma

Don’t touch your eye. Don’t rub your eye. Stay upright and keep your head up. Place a hard shield around your eye. Holding or taping a temporary eye shield, such as a paper cup or Styrofoam cup, may work in an emergency. Do not let the shield touch the surface of the eye.

How to lower your risk of eye injury at a protest:

• Wear shatter-resistant eye protection or sealed goggles

• Avoid contact lenses, which can trap chemicals against the eye

• Carry water or saline for eye rinsing

• Be aware of crowd movement and objects that could become projectiles

Important: Not all ERs are equipped to treat eye trauma. If possible, go to an emergency department with ophthalmology coverage.

📍 Local ERs with ophthalmologists in the department or on-call:

- United Hospital 333 Smith Ave N, Saint Paul, MN 55102

- Fairview Westbank 2312 S 6th St, Minneapolis, MN 55454

From the American Academy of Ophthalmology:

"Protesters who take to the streets may come under fire from rubber bullets, projectiles, tear gas, pepper spray or paintball guns. Projectiles such as rubber bullets may not be lethal, but they can seriously injure eyes and even lead to blindness.

If you are planning to join a protest, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends bringing eye protection with you in the event that a peaceful demonstration turns violent. Proper eyewear may help prevent possible injury from rubber bullets and other projectiles. But keep in mind that goggles, safety glasses and other protective eyewear do not always provide 100% protection. If your eye is injured, it’s a medical emergency. You must protect that eye immediately!"

If you have questions about the best way to protect your eyes while you exercise your right to peacefully protest, you can reach our office at (651)488-6771 or by sending us a message via our website RosevilleEye.com.

Stay safe, stay vigilant.

The Essilor® Stellest® lenses have been designed with an exclusive and pioneering technology called H.A.L.T.

The H.A.L.T. technology is made of a constellation of 1,021 invisible3 lenslets. This constellation creates a volume of myopic defocus, sending a signal to slow eye elongation and myopia progression.

After an eye exam performed by an eye care practitioner, Essilor® Stellest® lenses should be recommended to children who:

Are starting to get myopia
Are already myopic
Have progressing myopia

Schedule your child's eye exam by calling us at (651)488-6771 or by visiting RosevilleEye.com and find out if they are a candidate for Stellest lenses.
