February 7-14 is Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) Awareness Week❤️
Babies with certain medical conditions, such as congenital heart defects (CHD), are at increased risk of developing necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), even when they are born full term.
For heart babies, as well as all premature and medically fragile infants, mother’s own milk offers the best protection against NEC. When mother’s own milk is not available, pasteurized donor milk offers the next best protection.
❤️Meet Makenna❤️
Makenna was born at 35 weeks gestation with a heart defect and genetic condition. Makenna’s family was blindsided by her NEC diagnosis. Tragically, even though she received her mother’s milk, sweet Makenna passed away when she was 7.5 weeks old.
Makenna’s family is committed to honoring their daughter by helping to raise awareness and working to build a world without this devastating disease.
While we know human milk helps protect our most vulnerable infants from NEC, we need more research, education, and advocacy to understand and .
Together, we will build a world without NEC for babies like Makenna.
