February 7-14 is Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) Awareness Week❤️

Babies with certain medical conditions, such as congenital heart defects (CHD), are at increased risk of developing necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), even when they are born full term.

For heart babies, as well as all premature and medically fragile infants, mother’s own milk offers the best protection against NEC. When mother’s own milk is not available, pasteurized donor milk offers the next best protection.

❤️Meet Makenna❤️

Makenna was born at 35 weeks gestation with a heart defect and genetic condition. Makenna’s family was blindsided by her NEC diagnosis. Tragically, even though she received her mother’s milk, sweet Makenna passed away when she was 7.5 weeks old.

Makenna’s family is committed to honoring their daughter by helping to raise awareness and working to build a world without this devastating disease.

While we know human milk helps protect our most vulnerable infants from NEC, we need more research, education, and advocacy to understand and .

Together, we will build a world without NEC for babies like Makenna.

🙏We have 13 MILLION reasons to be grateful for our milk donors and supporters! In 2025, HMBANA (Human Milk Banking Association of North America) milk banks (of which the Minnesota Milk Bank for Babies is one) dispensed a record-breaking 13 million ounces of donor milk - up 12% from 2024.🙏

HMBANA Executive Director Lindsay Groff highlighted the impact of this achievement, stating, “This increase reflects the generosity of donors, the dedication of our nonprofit milk banks, and the clinicians who rely on donor milk to protect vulnerable infants when it matters most.”

This Black History Month, we would like to feature an article by the team at Nurturely - Breastfeeding is Black History. To understand and improve the perinatal healthcare landscape for Black families, it is important to understand the complex and oppressive relationship between breastfeeding and white supremacy.

"What interested my husband and me in donating my excess breastmilk is that our son drank donor milk for the first 2 days of his life while we were in the hospital. We were so grateful for donor milk at that time. I had to be rushed to the OR right after giving birth and had hemorrhaging. I later learned that that likely caused my milk to come in a little later. Thankfully, my milk came in with a giant whoosh! Others told us to sell the breastmilk, but we will always remember that our son drank donor milk during his first days of life. It was nice to finally be able to donate ourselves. It’s also nice to have room in our freezers for food again. LOL!

Thank you for taking my excess milk and putting it to good use!"

Too many individuals in our community are facing harsh weather without proper clothing. Others are still facing food insecurity and need support. We are hosting an ongoing collection at the Minnesota Milk Bank for Babies for our partners at Inspire Change Clinic. If you plan on dropping off milk or are in the area, please consider bringing by your gently used shoes, boots, coats and non-perishable food items!

We are so proud of the work that our partners at Inspire Change Clinic are doing to serve our community!

I'm thrilled to share an update on our Emergency Rapid Response Fund for Inspire Change Clinic!

The challenge: Fear is keeping Minneapolis families from accessing critical healthcare. But we're changing that narrative.

The impact so far: Since December, ICC's Rapid Response has provided home visits and safe transport to 100+ patients who needed care but couldn't safely access it. One of those patients? A mother in active labor. Because of this fund, she received the care she needed without having to choose between safety and health.

Where we stand: Thanks to 28 incredible donors, we've raised $5,616.33 toward our $50,000 goal. That's 11% funded and we're just getting started.

Why this matters: Healthcare shouldn't be a choice between safety and wellness. This fund removes that impossible decision for vulnerable families across Minneapolis.

How you can help: Every dollar directly funds transportation, home visits, and emergency care access. Whether it's $25 or $2,500, your contribution keeps families safe and healthy.

Let's close this gap together. Our community has already shown up. Let's multiply that impact.

Join our 28 donors in less than 60 seconds. Your contribution, no matter the size, keeps families safe and healthy.
