✨ Selfishness vs. Self Care vs. Self Neglect ✨

This came up in session today and it’s such an important conversation.

Many people fear “putting themselves first” or “prioritizing their needs” because they don’t want to be selfish. But here’s the truth:

➡️ Self care is not selfishness.
➡️ Self neglect isn’t selflessness.

I created a Self Care Scale to show the difference:
• On one end, we have self absorption/selfishness (me-first at all costs).
• On the other end, we have self neglect (everyone else first, at your expense).
• In the middle is self care—where needs are honored, balance is restored, and we become our best selves.

When we neglect ourselves, the cost is high: unmet health needs, burnout, resentment, even bitterness. And that doesn’t just affect us—it impacts our families, work, and community too.

💡 The takeaway: Self care is essential. When you care for yourself, you’re able to show up with more energy, compassion, and purpose in every part of your life.

So next time you catch yourself thinking, “I’m being selfish for taking care of myself”… think again.

✨ Want support shifting from self neglect → self care, or from self absorption → self care?

Thank you Placer PROTECT!
Today I had the privilege of participating as a vendor and speaker for the Senior Resource Fair.

It was a great turn out with over 70 vendors, 4 speakers and 500+ attendees!

I spoke about “Aging with Purpose” and highlighted how aging doesn’t mean loosing your purpose—it means you get the chance to redefine it.

I shared four ways to help seniors redefine purpose.
Did you know seniors with a purpose experience less cognitive decline than those who report no purpose?

Are you interested in learning how to redefine your purpose?

You don’t have to do it alone. This is exactly the kind of work I do with clients. Together, we uncover a sense of purpose that fits your unique interests, values, and capacity.

When you have clarity of purpose, you gain more energy, joy, and resilience — and, as this research shows, you’re also giving your brain the best chance to stay strong.

Book a session with me today to start living your purpose.

📣 May has been declared Older Californians Month by Governor Gavin Newsom.

May is also Mental Health Awareness Month.

Two causes close to my heart!

Did you know 5 out of every 10 people have been diagnosed with a mental health disorder by the time they reach 75 years old?

3 of those 5 friends have not received appropriate mental health care.

That’s why I founded Roseville Elder Services, a private therapy practice devoted entirely to meeting the unique emotional and mental health needs of seniors.

If you are one of the 3 out of 10 people who are struggling with mental health and have not received adequate support I see you. Call or email me today to schedule your free 15 min phone consultation.

It could be life changing.
