The colorful changing rainbow: Fleabane

Today we're introducing you to Fleabane, a member of the Asteraceae (Daisy) Family. This cute little daisy/chamomile-looking flower is a colorful little guy. Changing from white to pink/purple/blue when muddled.
Soothing respiratory discomfort when enjoyed as a tea, it is wonderful for sore throats and coughs. It is a mild expectorant that helps open and clear the airways.
Reducing inflammation, Fleabane is a gentle pain reliver for sore muscles, joints, and arthritis. It also helps any digestive discomfort such as bloating, indigestion, and even works as a mild laxative. Sipping on the muddled flowers helps clear kidneys of toxins and relax the body. Muddle a few leaves in the tea and the medicinal benefits multiply.
As an antiseptic for rashes, bug bites, and cuts, the crushed leaves applied to the infected sight reduce infection and prompt healing. And ladies, if you are looking for a traditional medicine to reduce your moon cycle discomfort and to regulate, sipping on this refreshing tea is wonderful.
***Precautions: Once again, make sure what you are picking is Fleabane, not a relative. Use only clean, non-sprayed flowers and leaves. Less is more! When used in low or moderate amounts, Fleabane is wonderful. But when used in large amounts, it's dangerous. Don't go crazy. If you are allergic to ragw**d, daisies, or any member of the Asteraceae Family, Fleabane use may cause an allergic reaction. Being it can help regulate your moon cycle and hormones, best not to use if pregnant or nursing.

Purslane: The Delicious Succulent

Welcome to one of the most nutritious plants on earth. Now considered a "Super Food", Purslane has made a comeback not only as a nutritious food, but also as a medicinal friend. Who knew that darn w**d growing in your driveway was so amazing?
With 7 X's more Beta Carotene than carrots, 6 X's more Vitamin E than spinach, Omega 3, vitamins A, C, calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, and packed full of antioxidants, this is one great super food!
Toss this crunchy succulent in salads, add it to soups, steam it, cook it or enjoy it raw. It's so versatile, you can even add it to smoothies or juice it. With 93% water, Purslane tastes similar to watercress.
Its anti-inflammatory properties help manage a wide range of inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis, asthma and IBS. While supporting digestive health, purslane also can help regulate metabolism and stabilize blood sugars. Antimicrobial properties support your immune system and protect against infections.
Purslane can also help most dermatitis conditions. Whether applied topically (mush that baby up and place on affected area for quick relief) or consumed, its skin health promoting properties help soothe and protect. From liver health to reduced cortisol and stress relief, purslane is your healthy go-to.
***Precautions: With its high oxalate content, if you suffer from kidney stones or are prone to them, it's best to let purslane be or use very seldom. If pregnant or nursing, overuse of purslane can contribute to uterine contractions, so be aware. If you are allergic to plants in the Portulaca family (succulents, moss rose, etc) do not ingest purslane. It will cause allergic reactions. One last note, if you are on anticoagulants or blood thinners, the high vitamin K in purslane can interfere and cause possible interactions.

Today we're discussing sweet Lamb's Quarter (or lesser known as Wild Spinach).

Lamb's Quarter is a powerhouse of vitamins, nutrients, and minerals. It has the same wonderful benefits as regular spinach, with a much higher beneficial content. Enjoy a natural immune boost, for it is full of vitamin C. High vitamin K helps utilize your sunshine's vitamin D. Throw in the calcium, Iron, and vitamin A and our friend Lamb's Quarter has you on your way to repairing tissue and enjoying an array of natural energy.
With its high fiber content, Wild Spinach helps with digestive health. It is also packed with antioxidants. (If you have attended one of our Sip & Spa classes, you know how often I stress the benefits of antioxidants!) What a delicious way to reduce free radicals and protect your body from oxidative stress.
An abundance of vitamin A which is essential for eye health, and magnesium and potassium for heart and blood health. The younger leaves are tender and delicious, but the older leaves can be more bitter. Mix the leaves into a salad and you have just boosted the natural health benefits.
***Precautions: Be sure what you're foraging for is Lamb's Quarter. If you're in doubt? Don't take the chance. Stay away from roadsides, parks, or anywhere it may be sprayed with pesticides or chemicals. Due to the high oxalate content of spinach (either wild or store-bought/garden grown) it can contribute to problems if you suffer from weak kidneys or kidney stones. Cooking thoroughly can reduce oxalate content, but best not to take the chance.
With its high vitamin K, those on anticoagulants and blood thinners may have a possible interaction.

It's that time again to offer a little information on your medicinal friends you are noticing this time of year! We introduce you to: Pineapple W**d (or Wild Chamomile).

Pineapple W**d truly has a mild pineapple flavor. Used for thousands of years by the Indigenous people in North America, it has similar benefits to the chamomile you all know and love. Brew 5-8 flower heads as a tea to reduce stress. Along with the relaxing effects of this beauty, our pineapple w**d friend reduces insomnia and can lead to a restful night's sleep.
Sip on a little tea if you suffer pain and inflammation. Its analgesic effects are relaxing to the body also. Working as a boost to your Immune System, Pineapple W**d helps balance levels in the digestive system. This also leads to being a wonderful fever reducer and settles an upset stomach. If you suffer eczema, psoriasis, or rashes, save the used tea flowers and dregs. Apply them to affected skin areas and its anti microbial/oxident/bacterial properties will help soothe, cool, and heal.
Used in moderation, Pineapple W**d is very beneficial to health. Look down while you walk, for it's everywhere right now!
***Precautions: Be sure if harvesting, you only utilize clean/healthy/non-sprayed plants. You will only need a few heads of this lovely little flower. Remember less is more...moderation always. Also, similar to Chamomile essential oil, if you are allergic to members of the Asteraceae Family (sunflowers, daisies, etc) negative reactions may occur.
