HCGH celebrates Dr. Marcos N Sunga, Jr. in his 41st year caring for our community!🎉
Dr. Marcos Sunga is a graduate of the Cebu Institute of Medicine, in the Philippines. Dr. Sunga did his residency at the Chicago Medical School Hospitals and fellowships with the Veterans Hospital in Pulmonary Medicine and University of Illinois in Public Health Leadership. Dr. Sunga has cared for the small rural population in Hardin County since 1985. He opened his first private practice in Hardin County in 1985 and began working at the Hardin County General Hospital soon after. In 1987 he became the Medical Director of HCGH and remains in that position today.
Dr. Sunga has held 8 different Board Certifications in his career including, Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Adolescent Medicine, Hospital Medicine, Pain Management, Forensic Medicine, Illinois Public Health Institute Fellow, and American College of Physicians Fellow. Dr. Sunga sits as the Medical Director for Hardin County General Hospital and the Illinois Youth Center DOC. In recent years he has served as director for the Rosiclare Healthcare Center, Southern Seven Health Department and an Associate Medical Director of Community Health & Emergency Services.
Along with his dedication for caring for the community’s healthcare needs he also serves on several boards in the area, including the Hardin County General Hospital Board of Directors, Southern Seven Health Department Board, Hardin County TB Board, and The American Cancer Society Chairman.
Dr. Sunga also passes his love of medicine on through teaching. He has served as a Clinical Instructor at the Department of Community Medicine and Rural Health University at the North Dakota School of Medicine and is an active instructor in Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
Dr. Sunga has won honors since 1970 when he was the Valedictorian of his class. As well as graduating Cum Laude with his Bachelors in Biology. He was an outstanding member of the Alpha Sigma Fraternity and awarded excellence in the Study of Anatomy in 1975. More recently Dr. Sunga was named the Most Outstanding Physician in Southern Illinois Quality of service Award in 1990 and was a finalist in, Six Who Care, Tri State Jefferson Award in 1992. Dr. Sunga is three time medical journal published author having co-authored studies on Pulmonary Manifestations of Leukemia & Lymphoma, The Rib Cage and External Interosseous Internal Muscles in the Normal and Emphysematous Male, and a review of Respiratory Diseases.
Dr Sunga is driven by the memory of his late wife Emma, whose unwavering and compassionate support continue to inspire his dedication to patient care. Dr. Sunga has resided in Hardin County since 1985. Dr. Sunga and his wife Emma raised 5 children that are living in various locations in the US. When Dr. Sunga is not caring for his patients, he is traveling to visit his children and grandchildren.
