Differences Between Spa Massage and Medical Massage
Ever wonder how a massage differs when administered at a spa vs a clinical setting? After all, they both involve someone applying pressure to your body, right?
They do share that similarity, there are many important distinctions between the two. It’s also essential to understand those differences for your own health and well being.
The key differences are in the purpose of the massage as well as the reasons a person might be seeking a type of massage over the other. The end goal of the massages might differ greatly as well.
A clinical massage is focused on relieving a medical need. Your insurance will typically cover a part of it, expecting the visits to aide in resolving your condition. In contrast, spa massage is expected to be a relaxing experience.
A spa massage may feel similar but, the purposes of these massage types differ, so techniques will differ. A spa visit, you typically enjoy a massage however, during a medical massage, a professional uses a broader set of modalities, like Trigger Point Therapy or Myofascial Release to aid muscle health recovery.
Massages differ in how a session is planned based on your needs. A runner may need a medical massage for a difficult injury while, someone in a car accident may have different needs due to whiplash.
There's a plan during your medical massage and goals based around your recovery. Tangible results are expected with a medical massage.

Recent studies have found that a high percentage of pain is caused by restrictions in connective tissues of the body known as fascia.
Fascial Restrictions do not show up in any of the medical tests now being performed, so they often go unnoticed and misdiagnosed. If traditional medical treatment, including medications, physical therapy or surgery has failed to relieve a person's pain, then the person is likely to have fascial restrictions.
These fascial restrictions have the potential of putting enormous pressure on nerves and bulge discs, pulling the body out of proper alignment, and or compressing joint surfaces. All this causes much of the pain that people suffer with.
Fascia surrounds and infuses every other structure of the body including muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels, and organs. It also attaches to every bone in the body and is continuous from head to toe.
Normally, fascia should be mostly fluid, and flexible. What happens from trauma, inflammation, surgery, or postures, is the fascia will shorten, dehydrate and solidify. It has been shown that this shortening of fascia has the potential to exert forces up to 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures, like nerves.
Also, as it becomes restricted and shortens, it can compress joints including the spine, and pull the body out of proper alignment. The good news is that fascial restrictions can be treated safely and effectively using a technique called Myofascial Release MFR.
