This week, Drs. Richard Shlofmitz, Allen Jeremias, and Evan Shlofmitz performed the first ever use of Shockwave's newest intravascular lithotripsy balloon, 'Aero.’ This device is more deliverable then prior versions, making it easier to reach complex calcified lesions that are difficult to get to. This month, the Heart Failure team at St. Francis Hospital marked their 100th LVAD procedure. An LVAD, or Left Ventricular Assist Device, is a surgically implanted mechanical pump that helps the heart's left ventricle to pump blood. This happens when a patient has severe heart failure – when the heart is too weak to pump on its own. The program is led by Dr. Edward Lundy, Surgical Director of the Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) Program. Congratulations to this dedicated cardiology team! Recently, grateful son Mike Kaspar and his team from QXO presented St. Francis and Catholic Health leadership with a check for $50,000. The funds were raised for St. Francis Hospital through the third annual QXO golf outing which was held on June 9th at The Vineyards Golf course in Riverhead. Mike is profoundly grateful for the compassionate care his late father, Thomas Kaspar, received while at the Cancer Institute and at St. Francis Hospital.
