May 29 is World Digestive Health Day. Kerrilynn Patti-Trepiccione, Registered Dietitian for the Women’s Heart Wellness Program, shares the following advice -

5 Ways to Improve your Digestive Health:

1. Choose 25-30 grams of fiber daily from plant based foods like whole grains, lentils, legumes, nuts, seeds, beans, fruits and vegetables.
2. Include probiotics from your diet with foods like yogurt, Kefir, Kombucha tea, sauerkraut, and tofu.
3. Drink at least 64 ounces of water daily.
4. Limit your added sugar intake to no more than 25 grams per day (6 teaspoons).
5. Limit alcohol intake and highly processed foods.

First in the World Procedure: On May 13, St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center® treated its first patient using the Evolut™ FX+ transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) system, a minimally invasive alternative to open-heart surgical aortic valve replacement.

St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center is the first hospital in the world to make use of this new TAVR system, which further refines the trusted Evolut TAVR platform, designed to facilitate coronary access, for the treatment of severe aortic stenosis (ssAS).

Dr. Richard Shlofmitz, Chairman of Cardiology, led a team in performing the first case in the U.S. utilizing the Agent device, a balloon delivery system, administering targeted medication to the patient as they receive treatment for stenosis, or a blockage within an existing stent in a coronary artery. Typically, 10 percent of stents can re narrow after a few years. Clinical teams hope that this process will help to prevent heart attacks, as studies show that tissue regrowth is diminished with Agent in place. St. Francis was the number one enroller in the Agent study.
