This was an opportunity to recognize the DeMatteis family for their multi-generational generosity and leadership at St. Francis. Rich DeMatteis added, “My mom would have been so proud of this day.”

On Friday and Saturday, May 31 & June 1, Dr. Richard Shlofmitz, Dr. Evan Shlofmitz, Dr. Allen Jeremias, Dr. Ziad Ali and our interventional cardiology team hosted the 10th annual Optimizing PCI Conference in New York City. The event was a transformative two-day event encompassing Endovascular, Electrosurgery, and Coronary sessions. This year, OPCI.24 introduced two innovative components: the "Mastering Electrosurgery Workshop" and the "Endovascular Think Tank," offering unique perspectives and insights.

June 2 is National Cancer Survivors Day. We honor our various Oncology teams. Our Radiation Oncology team is featured in this photo. Radiation therapy uses high doses of radiation to destroy cancer cells and prevent their spread. These compassionate clinicians work closely with oncologists, surgeons, and various clinicians to coordinate care. Thank you for all that you do for our patients!

The OPCI Conference is now underway in NYC. During one session of the conference, the “Mastering Electrosurgery Workshop,” participants engaged in an immersive educational experience, with equipment demonstrations and case reviews.

Optimizing PCI (OPCI) is a series of educational meetings dedicated to helping cardiologists optimize decision-making in interventional cardiac procedures with a focus on state-of-the-art intravascular imaging and physiology technologies.

Our renowned international faculty is committed to helping cardiologists master the interpretation of invasive diagnostic devices and provide treatment with precision, thus improving outcomes for patients.

On April 30, St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center® treated its first patient using AGENT, a new system administering targeted medication to cardiac patients as they as they receive treatment for stenosis, or a blockage within an existing stent in a coronary artery. St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center® is the first hospital in the United States to make use of the new in-stent delivery system.

May 29 is World Digestive Health Day. Kerrilynn Patti-Trepiccione, Registered Dietitian for the Women’s Heart Wellness Program, shares the following advice -

5 Ways to Improve your Digestive Health:

1. Choose 25-30 grams of fiber daily from plant based foods like whole grains, lentils, legumes, nuts, seeds, beans, fruits and vegetables.
2. Include probiotics from your diet with foods like yogurt, Kefir, Kombucha tea, sauerkraut, and tofu.
3. Drink at least 64 ounces of water daily.
4. Limit your added sugar intake to no more than 25 grams per day (6 teaspoons).
5. Limit alcohol intake and highly processed foods.

First in the World Procedure: On May 13, St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center® treated its first patient using the Evolut™ FX+ transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) system, a minimally invasive alternative to open-heart surgical aortic valve replacement.

St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center is the first hospital in the world to make use of this new TAVR system, which further refines the trusted Evolut TAVR platform, designed to facilitate coronary access, for the treatment of severe aortic stenosis (ssAS).

The Infusion Unit continues to celebrate Oncology Nurses Month. Oncology nurses are pillars of strength for their patients and their loved ones. Their specialized knowledge and compassionate approach is vital to empowering hope and transforming the landscape of cancer care.

Dr. Richard Shlofmitz, Chairman of Cardiology, led a team in performing the first case in the U.S. utilizing the Agent device, a balloon delivery system, administering targeted medication to the patient as they receive treatment for stenosis, or a blockage within an existing stent in a coronary artery. Typically, 10 percent of stents can re narrow after a few years. Clinical teams hope that this process will help to prevent heart attacks, as studies show that tissue regrowth is diminished with Agent in place. St. Francis was the number one enroller in the Agent study.

St. Francis of Assisi, our hospital’s patron saint, started the tradition of displaying the crèche, or Christmas crib. Today, we celebrated the blessing of the crèche at St. Francis.

The annual Field of Honor, featuring American flags sponsored in tribute to military service members both past and present, is now on proud display on the hospital grounds along Port Washington Boulevard. This is always a moving sight as you drive past St. Francis Hospital during the month of November. At a ceremony on November 2, the Guild Board gathered with hospital leadership, local veterans and our community’s elected officials to honor, remember and thank our veterans for their service. Special thanks to the Guild of St. Francis Hospital for organizing this tribute every year. We had the privilege of being joined by Town of North Hempstead Supervisor, Jennifer DeSena, Elaine Phillips, Nassau County Comptroller, Elizabeth Liguori, Chief of Staff for the Nassau County Comptroller, Mariann Dalimonte, Councilmember, Town of North Hempstead - CD6, Peter Zuckerman, Councilmember, Town of North Hempstead Gina Sillitti, Assemblymember, AD-16, Randall Rosenbaum, Mayor, Village of Flower Hill, Ragini Srivastava, Town Clerk, Town of North Hempstead, and Mary Jo Collins, Trustee, Village of Flower Hill.
