"The factors impacting successful patient care are many and varied. Early diagnosis, proper adherence to prescription medication schedules, and effective monitoring and management of chronic disease, for example, all contribute to better outcomes. However, each of these factors can be hindered by outside influences — medication doesn’t work as well if it isn’t taken as prescribed, and disease can be missed or misdiagnosed in early stages if symptoms are mild or not present.

Giovanni Traverso, the Karl Van Tassel Career Development Professor, an associate professor of mechanical engineering, and a gastroenterologist in the Division of Gastroenterology, Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), is working on a variety of innovative solutions to improve patient care. As a physician and an engineer, he brings a unique perspective."

"A new study published in the journal Nature reports results of the first-in-human phase 1 clinical trials of a novel immunotherapy approach for solid tumors expressing glypican-3 (GPC3). Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Cancer Center led the study, which tested chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells enhanced with the protein interleukin-15 (IL-15).

CAR T cells have shown limited efficacy in patients with solid cancers, despite dramatic success in some hematologic malignancies. Preclinical studies showed that the addition of IL-15, which helps T cells survive and multiply, could improve the performance of CAR T cell-based immunotherapies."

"In the 40-plus years since it was identified, scientists have made notable progress against HIV, transforming the infection from a death sentence into a manageable chronic condition, one that affects some 1.2 million people in the United States and nearly 40 million worldwide.

This decades-long quest for a cure for HIV has also yielded broader insights that have implications for the treatment of COVID-19, cancer, and other diseases."

Decades of scientific work turned the tide on a fatal disease.

Thank you to everyone who attended our 2024 Annual Patient Safety Conference: A Medical Malpractice Mock Trial. We hope you found the discussions valuable and that you gained a deeper understanding of the critical aspects involved in malpractice lawsuits.

Throughout the event, we explored:
• The key components of a malpractice case and how documentation can impact its defensibility.
• The essential role families play in initiating these cases and the areas where healthcare facilities are most prone to liability.
• Strategies for developing practices to mitigate future claims and strengthen your defense in the event of litigation.

Your participation and engagement made this event a success.
Thank you again!

“One of the longstanding challenges that we’ve been exploring is the development of systems that enable the oral delivery of macromolecules that usually require an injection to be administered. This work represents one of the next major advances in that progression,” says Giovanni Traverso, director of the Laboratory for Translational Engineering and an associate professor of mechanical engineering at MIT, a gastroenterologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, an associate member of the Broad Institute, and the senior author of the study.

Inspired by the jets of water squids use to propel themselves, an MIT-led team developed an ingestible capsule that releases drugs directly into the lining of the stomach or other organs of the digestive tract.

"Experts convened by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have identified five elements of a brain-based condition that has emerged as a leading cause of vision impairment starting in childhood in the United States and other industrialized nations. Known as cerebral (or cortical) visual impairment (CVI), some estimates suggest that at least 3% of primary school children exhibit CVI-related visual problems, which vary, but may include difficulty visually searching for an object or person or understanding a scene involving complex motion. Their report, based on evidence and expert opinion, was published today in Ophthalmology."

Research needed to establish best diagnostic and management strategies for increasingly common condition.

SATURDAY SCIENCE

“Tumor cells adapt their metabolic mechanisms to evade immune-base therapies. Understanding how these mechanisms of immune resistance work can provide new targets to refine immune-based treatments so they benefit more patients. Our discovery is one step in that direction,” said senior study author Weiping Zou, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Center of Excellence for Cancer Immunology and Immunotherapy at the Rogel Cancer Center.

New research has discovered why some cancers don’t respond to immunotherapy treatment: A metabolite transporter within the tumor microenvironment blocks a key type of tumor cell death integral to immune response.
