For Older Adults, Swimming Might Be Just What the Doctor Ordered
In the winter, many older people cease their exercise regimens due to less daylight and other factors, but seniors should consider adding swimming to their routines in these colder months, reports WTOP. Swimming can provide a well-rounded muscular workout and good cardio. Dr. Angela Hsu, a geriatrician with Kaiser Permanente in Northern Virginia, said that swimming minimally impacts the joints, can help reduce stress, boost metabolism, regulate weight, and improve sleep. "There are ...

The Cost of Assisted Living: What You Need to Know
Moving a loved one into an assisted living community is a significant decision that often comes with a flurry of questions, especially regarding costs. Understanding these financial aspects is crucial for families navigating this process. Here’s a breakdown of what you need to know about the costs associated with assisted living and the various payment options available.

Typical Costs of Assisted Living
Monthly Fees:

The average cost of assisted living varies widely based on location, amenities, and level of care provided. On average, families can expect to pay between $3,000 to $6,000 per month.
These fees typically cover housing, meals, housekeeping, and transportation, as well as basic medical assistance.
Initial Deposits and Community Fees:

Many assisted living facilities require a one-time community fee upon admission, which can range from $1,000 to $5,000.
This fee may cover administrative costs and amenities.
Additional Charges:

Depending on individual care needs, there may be additional costs for services such as medication management, personal care assistance, or specialized therapies.
Payment Options
Private Pay:

Many families choose to pay for assisted living out-of-pocket using savings, pensions, or income.
Long-Term Care Insurance:

If you have long-term care insurance, your policy may cover some or all expenses associated with assisted living. It's essential to review the policy details and consult with the provider to understand what is covered.
Government Programs:

Some families may be eligible for government assistance programs, such as Medicaid. While Medicaid typically does not directly cover assisted living costs in many states, some programs may offer waiver programs that provide financial assistance.
Veterans Benefits:

Veterans and their families may qualify for additional financial assistance through the VA, including Aid and Attendance benefits designed to help with assisted living costs.
Factors Influencing Costs
Location: Urban areas tend to have higher costs than rural areas.
Facility Features: Luxurious amenities and services can increase monthly fees.
Level of Care Required: Individuals who need more extensive medical care will likely incur higher costs.
Making an Informed Decision
Before making a decision, it’s vital to visit several facilities, assess their services and amenities, and ask detailed questions about costs. Transparent communication about fees and what is included in the monthly charges can help families make informed decisions.

We are here to assist you in navigating this process. If you have questions, need guidance, or want to learn more about how to manage the costs of assisted living, please call us today for an appointment. Our services are free for families.

Why Does America's Falling Epidemic Keep Getting Worse?
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data show that across the United States, 41,000 older adults die from falls per year, and every year, falls by older adults lead to 3.6 million emergency room visits and 1.2 million hospital stays, costing about $80 billion, according to the Wall Street Journal. A recent University of Michigan study also indicated that the number of falls rises 1.5 percent per year, despite advancements in prevention and care. Geoffrey Hoffman, a gerontologist at the University of Michigan, said, "It could be that efforts aren't working — or that they are, by mitigating even worse potential injury risk in the population. Either way, more investment in prevention and funding for fall education and prevention programs would help." The CDC's Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths, and Injuries (STEADI) program provides health care providers with a screening tool to assess which patients are at risk of falls. Providers assess each patient's history of falls, inadequate vitamin D intake, vision problems, and foot problems. In one assessment,...

Best Cruises for Seniors Who Love to Travel by Sea
The Points Guy reports that the various cruise lines are increasing service offerings and catering more to older adult passengers. The best senior cruises mix adult-focused onboard activities with interesting excursions ashore. More and more cruise companies are recognizing that no two retirees want the same thing from their travels. In general, though, they have been able to determine that most seniors have time to dedicate to longer itineraries. Looking at individual cruise lines, Holland America was rated the best for seniors with limited mobility. Viking, meanwhile, received high marks from seniors who prefer an education-based, adults-only sailing. Windstar Cruises took top honors for best serving seniors looking for an intimate onboard experience, and Azamara Cruises was No. 1 for seniors looking for an upscale, but budget-friendly cruise. Finally, Cunard was tops with seniors who prefer traditional cruising, while Regent Seven Seas Cruises is the best for seniors looking for a luxury cruise experience.
