“In every change, in every falling leaf there is some pain, some beauty. And that’s the way new leaves grow.” - Amit Ray

Tomorrow marks the first day of Fall. We will start to see our world change, and the trees will soon fill with beautifully colored leaves. And much like the leaves, people change too.

Most of us love watching the leaves change, but don’t enjoy going through change ourself. While change feels scary and unknown, it is also rewarding in the end when we accept that it’s a necessary and common part of life. Change allows us to learn new skills, challenge our beliefs, let go of relationships that aren’t serving us, form new relationships, become better versions of ourselves, and grow. What changes are you going through? How will your change reward you in the end?

Talking about su***de will feel scary to most people. It can help us cope with our fear to learn more about su***de. Knowing more about myths and facts, risk factors, and warning signs for su***de can help prepare us to know what to look for, have conversations, and support others.

September is National Su***de Awareness and Prevention month. Su***de is an important topic, so let’s start the conversation. I’ll be running a 3-part series this month on information, how to help someone struggling, and how to get involved in your community to best support su***de awareness and prevention efforts. It’s time to raise awareness and talk about su***de so people don’t struggle in silence.

Do you feel overly responsible or guilty for situations in your life? Personalization is a cognitive distortion that involves blaming yourself for things that are either out of your control or really had nothing to do with you. Personalization can lead to anxiety, depression, and difficulty setting boundaries. If you’re wanting to challenge this distortion, try this tip! Imagine your life is a delicious cup of coffee. You wouldn’t just let anything through that coffee filter and into your cup. You definitely wouldn’t drink a cup of coffee that had chewing gum, leaves, or junk in it, right? Practice sorting through what you take responsibility for by putting things into your coffee filter and then, based on the facts, decide what goes into your cup!

Dialectics are my favorite. So often during our day we experience two opposites that exist together. A desire to feel calm while feeling angry. A urge to hide away and feel close to others. When faced with a dialectic, if we look for it, there is often a middle ground between the two. I can honor my anger and communicate my feelings in a calm way. I can feel scared to be close to others and challenge myself to be open with trusted people. When faced with calm seas and rough waters, what’s your middle ground?
