We are excited to announce our new 24/7 confidential crisis hotline for community perinatal birth workers (midwives, doulas, student midwives etc). If you have experienced a difficult birth or other work based experience, feel free to call any time. Sometimes it can be helpful to debrief confidentially with an unconnected trauma informed birth worker who is not in your community. We can lend a non-judgmental ear and give you access to other services if you want them. You don’t have to go it alone or be strong for everyone. β€œPeace begins at birth, but peace starts with me.”

The Apgar score is a quick method of assessing clinical health of your newborn baby in the immediate period following birth.⁣
⁣
π—ͺ𝐑𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐬 𝐒𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐝?⁣
⁣
It is given at 1, 5 and 10 minutes of birth. In rare instances it may be continued beyond 10 minutes of age.⁣
⁣
π—ͺ𝐑𝐨 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐑𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐒𝐧𝐠?⁣
⁣
The Apgar score is done by whoever is assessing baby at time of birth, usually a Midwife or Paediatrican (if called to attend). This means that it can be quite subjective, dependent on the person.⁣
⁣
π—ͺ𝐑𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐭𝐑𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬?⁣
⁣
It consists of an assessment of FIVE categories as outline below:⁣
⁣
1. Activity (muscle tone)⁣
⁣
2. Pulse (heart rate)⁣
⁣
3. Grimace (reflexes)⁣
⁣
4. Appearance (skin colour)⁣
⁣
5. Respirations.⁣
⁣

⁣
Each category is scored 0, 1, or 2 depending on the observed condition to give a maximum score of 10.

A score greater than 7 is considered normal. If the score is below 7, it is continued every 5 minutes until normal or 20 minutes of age.⁣

An APGAR score alone does not tell us too much, only if we need to intervene in some way. The APGAR score should always be looked at in context along with other indicators of perinatal compromimise including the cord blood pH, the extent of resuscitation and the subsequent progress. As parents, it is easy to focus on the APGAR score a lot but be reassured that initial low scores with good recovery are unlikely to be of any significance going forward.⁣
