The Apgar score is done by whoever is assessing baby at time of birth, usually a Midwife or Paediatrican (if called to attend). This means that it can be quite subjective, dependent on the person.β£

Each category is scored 0, 1, or 2 depending on the observed condition to give a maximum score of 10.
A score greater than 7 is considered normal. If the score is below 7, it is continued every 5 minutes until normal or 20 minutes of age.β£

An APGAR score alone does not tell us too much, only if we need to intervene in some way. The APGAR score should always be looked at in context along with other indicators of perinatal compromimise including the cord blood pH, the extent of resuscitation and the subsequent progress. As parents, it is easy to focus on the APGAR score a lot but be reassured that initial low scores with good recovery are unlikely to be of any significance going forward.β£
