What is Sciatica?
Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back, through the hips and buttocks, and down each leg. It usually affects only one side of the body.
Causes of Sciatica:
Sciatica is typically caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve due to conditions such as:
* Herniated (slipped) disc – A common cause where a disc in the spine presses on the nerve.
* Spinal stenosis – Narrowing of the spinal canal that puts pressure on the nerve.
* Piriformis syndrome – The piriformis muscle in the buttock irritates the sciatic nerve.
* Spondylolisthesis – A vertebra slips out of place, compressing the nerve.
* Trauma or injury – A fall or accident can impact the nerve.
Symptoms of Sciatica:
* Sharp, burning, or shooting pain in the lower back, buttocks, and down the leg.
* Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the affected leg.
* Pain that worsens with prolonged sitting, standing, or movement.
* Difficulty walking or controlling leg movements in severe cases.
Treatment Options:
* Self-care: Rest, ice/heat therapy, and over-the-counter pain relievers.
* Physical therapy: Stretching and strengthening exercises to relieve pressure.
* Medications: Anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants, or corticosteroid injections.
* Chiropractic care or acupuncture: Alternative treatments that may provide relief.
* Surgery (rare cases): If the pain is severe and does not improve with other treatments, surgery like a discectomy or laminectomy may be considered.
How long does it take a chiropractor to fix a sciatic nerve?
Most people feel significant relief within four to six weekly chiropractic adjustments. Although it may take a little time to regain full strength, most people can return to normal activities, including strenuous exercise, within about two months
