SENSORY-FRIENDLY HAIRCUTS
Tip #5- Don’t worry, Troy. You are not the only one that feels ticklish near and around your ears. Remember that this area is highly sensitive so even if the rest of the haircut has gone off without a hitch, take extra time and sensitivity near the ears. Exchange loud, vibrating clippers for shears if possible and check in with the person or their caregiver to see what can be left a little longer if necessary. Remember the goal is to increase their comfortability with future haircuts, and to build trust so that they will want to come back. For more hair cut, color, and style resources, or to book an appointment send us a DM or call and ask for Boyce at 512-868-8079. 💙

SENSORY-FRIENDLY HAIRCUTS Tip #4- We like the head buzzer too, Troy! It is very relaxing. Troy is referring to a handheld back and neck massager that can be used on the head to prepare them for how it will feel to have the hair clippers up against their head. If they are not able to tolerate the massager at all, you know you will then need to revert to a silent haircut tool kit . The goal is to create an atmosphere that they enjoy and trust. Continue using the head massager at home if they will allow it to build trust with the vibration sensation over time if you want to attempt hair clippers in the future for haircuts. There are so many other amazing options outside of hair clippers, but every time a tool is introduced allows them to feel it and experience it before you attempt to put it close to their head. Stay tuned for more tips all this week… 💙

SENSORY-FRIENDLY HAIRCUTS Tip #3- Yes, Troy! You can absolutely touch the tools I’m going to be using on your head. Before you begin, allow them to feel the smoothness of the shears, hear the sound it makes when it opens and closes, or hold the brush and comb. Allow them to touch the clippers if clippers are going to be used. Allow them to wear their headphones while you turn the clippers on, and then see if they can tolerate slowly removing their headphones as they adjust to the sound. If they are still struggling with the clippers use a silent haircut tool kit instead, and provide a vibrating toy they can play with to get used to the vibration sensation for the future. Continuing to allow them to touch and experience the haircut tools during their breaks can also help. Be willing to get up and move around during break or during haircut sessions, including cutting their hair while they are standing, sitting, laying down, or pacing. Stay tuned for more tips all this week… 💙

SENSORY-FRIENDLY HAIRCUTS
Tip #2- Troy says “Give me a break!” Although he definitely loves KitKat, he’s talking about routine breaks during the haircut to calm himself. Using a timer to set break times I five minute intervals can really help. During the break they can walk around, play with a fidget, play with kinetic sand, or look at some of the tools that will be used later in the haircut. Offer weighted items like a weighted lap pad or a wiggle seat to help them stay more calm during the cutting sessions. Stay tuned for more tips all this week… 💙

SENSORY FRIENDLY HAIRCUTS Tip #1- You’re right, Troy! Hair clippers are loud. Hairdryers, curling irons, hair-washing stations, and the general social buzz of a salon can be very overstimulating for people with autism, or who have sensory sensitivities. Try offering a quiet space away from the hustle and bustle of the salon, limit the use of loud tools, and try a silent haircut kit that simulates the look of hair clippers, but without all the noise! Stay tuned for more tips all this week… 💙
