Lewis the Donkey and Friends

Lewis the Donkey and Friends Lewis is a little donkey with a big mission of helping others any way that he can.

Joined by his equine and canine buddies, Lewis and his friends team up with counselor Kim Sullivan, LPC-S, RPT-S, to help bring positive change in people's lives.

I'm not sure what is going on with my professional account - it has started asking for access to my contacts (which I have not given it) in order to find friends. Has anyone else encountered this? I won't be posting any more photos until I figure this out.

The Animal Assisted Counseling Academy 2025 Practicum is a wrap! Here are a few of the furry faces (and one of the floofy tails) that I had the honor of getting to know this year.

As a trainer at the Academy, It has been exciting to watch all 10 of this year's canine participants learn and grow alongside their human partners. I am deeply proud of each and every one of you!

Adults may feel unsure of how they can support their children after a traumatic event happens. In the aftermath of our recent Texas floods, I thought it might be helpful to pass on some tips I have often shared with clients (and parents of clients) as well as with personal friends. I'm putting the link to Dr. Perry's article in the comments.

With our 10th year of the Animal-Assisted Counseling Academy underway, my thoughts are focused more on training- which is probably why I have been posting more about our family pup Teddy lately. Will he be another someday? I don't know. But he is a step closer to the possibility. Today he became a certified AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy!

Thanks so much, Ash at Petco Round Rock - for all you do in helping me to bring out the best in all my dogs!

I want to give a big shout out to Samantha Clements, LPC Associate, for helping me out with some doggie socialization with my pup Teddy during our supervision time today! Sam is a fellow Animal Assisted Counseling practioner and completed the same AAC Academy program at Texas State University as I did, so she was well-suited to help.

We all know "that kid"...you know, the one that gets all excited and poses in front of the one you're trying to get a picture of. For me, "that kid" is Teddy (our 7 month old puppy).

I was trying to get a picture of Barney, who once again, dashed out for a good roll in the dirt before time to go to work. Thankfully, I had just enough time to give Barney a bath. (Barney wasn't as thankful as I was).

Teddy does have a happy smile, though!

You may be wondering why I have been focusing on the dogs and not the donkeys lately. We're actually in between equine locations right now, meaning that our Equine-Assisted Counseling sessions have been paused temporarily. Additionally, the new puppy has been taking a lot of my extra time and energy. So, I just haven't had much to show you.

Lewis and the other donkeys are doing fine. This morning they were all hanging out in their favorite sunny spot to warm up (it got down in to the teens again last night). Then I treated them to some warm mash to make sure they are staying healthy and taking in enough water.

Look for more updates soon as we resume counseling sessions and get back into our training routine!

Teddy turned 4 months old last week. Let's celebrate by seeing who can guess what breeds are under that birthday hat.

I'll give you a hint...from his DNA results, looks like one parent was a pure bred (or very close to it) while the other parent was a nice mix of 5 identified breeds plus a bit of "supermutt".

What do you think? We were surprised...i bet you will be, too!

Are good therapy dogs born that way or are they trained? Both!

Right now we're giving our newest pup Teddy the strongest foundation we can by getting him out into different friendly environments, strengthening our relationship, and teaching him basic manners. Then we'll see if he wants to follow in Gordon and Barney's pawprints as a professional therapy dog. Or maybe he'll be happier doing something else - like participating in agility or getting out in the community with the family.

This makes me think about my work with parents and kids!

It's the little things that bring a smile to a play therapist's face - literally! Barney is helping me celebrate our latest additions to the dollhouse (don't let his serious face fool you).

Toys like these can be hard to find, but very important in giving kids the opportunity to explore all of their thoughts, feelings, and experiences openly.
