Here is the second in the Can Medication deplete our nutrients?

As a Chiropractor I cannot prescribe medication, nor can I direct anyone on how to take your prescribed medication. I can and do try to help people understand the vital role proper nutrition has and how it can help in their health journey. Many medications can deplete nutrients for our bodies, this is not to say medications are bad but if they cause us to lose nutrients that can cause negative side effects on our health.
Drugs for High Cholesterol
Cholesterol Lowering Medications (Statin) such as Crestor, Lipitor, Zocor and Pravachol are prescribed to try and reduce LDL “Bad” cholesterol and raise HDL “good” cholesterol.

These medications work for many people, this paper is to help inform what can happen to vital nutrients. Specifically Co-Enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) which is a necessary antioxidant. Statins deplete this and the side effects (some severe) can be significant. These side effects can be:
Heart Failure- the heart weakens and can lead to Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). CoQ10 is considered the most valuable nutrient for patients with heart failure. Studies have shown increased risks of heart failure in statin users. It is vital to add this nutrient back to help avoid the heart from weakening.
Muscle weakness or pain- This is a side effect that should not be ignored. Severe side effects can develop.
Low energy/Fatigue

For many medications to work, they require a cofactor or coenzyme. The statins need CoQ10 to work, so if the levels of CoQ10 get low the medicine is less effective. The need for supplementing CoQ10 is a must if using statins..
The general rule of thumb is for every 1 mg of statin, take 10 mg of CoQ10. So 20 mg of statin, use 200 Mg of CoQ10.

This is not at all meant to suggest not using the medication but rather to know how to avoid possible deficiencies that can lead to side effects that can be serious.

Another name for CoQ10 in supplement form is Ubiquinol. Some studies show Ubiquinol to be a superior form of CoQ10.

Please let me know if you have any specific medications or other concerns with nutritional deficiencies.

Sincerely,
Richard J. Milne DC

11/16/2022

Blood sugar or diabetic medications like Metformin, Glucovance or Clucophase deplete Folic Acid and Cobalamin (Vitamins B9 and B12). It does so by depleting the intrinsic factor in our stomach, which is responsible for proper absorption of these vitamins in the small intestines. The longer the medication is used and the higher the dosage the greater the loss of the vitamin. It can also deplete CoQ10, which is vital for cardiovascular protection and is an important antioxidant (more of that under the Cholesterol medications).

Some of the possible symptoms that can develop with a deficiency of B9 and B12:
Extreme tiredness
Lack of energy
Tingling (pins and needles)
Sore and red tongue
Mouth ulcers
Muscle weakness
Vision disturbances
Depression or confusion
Memory problems

Recommended doses are B9 (folic acid) 400-800 mcg, B12 200-800 mcg and CoQ10 20-300 mg daily.

Future topics: Cholesterol, Pain medication (including OTC), High Blood pressure, Birth control, Antacids/Heart Burn and more.

Please let me know if you have any specific medications or other concerns with nutritional deficiencies.

I've been getting more and more people having questions about side effects from medication. As a Chiropractor I cannot comment on taking your medication but we can discuss the possible nutritional deficiencies that can arise from some medications. I am working on a list of common medications and the nutrients that may be needed if you are taking these. If you have any specific questions about nutritional deficiencies you may have please let me know. I will post soon with the common recommendation.

Here is a video of Dr. Price, Weill Cornell fellow of pulmonology in New York City. He does a great job of calmly explaining what to do to protect yourself and your family, what to do if you do have Covid-19 and when to go to the hospital. His main point, do not be scared!

An abbreviated edit of Dr. David Price's recent online talk with friends and family, aimed to educate, empower and protect each other during the COVID-19 pan...

Proper ergonomics while working from home or home schooling. The proper setup for how you go about your work is vital. Many people will be sitting on the couch with a laptop or kids laying on the bed doing school work. Most people do not have the proper work stations at home.
A primary goal is to avoid sitting in a slouched position, as your back is hunched forward this puts a great strain not only on the mid and lower back but adversely affects the neck as well.

I always recommend starting from the floor and work your way up.
-Your feet should comfortably touch the ground.
-Your knees and hips should be at 90 degree angles
-Your back should be supported by the back of the chair.
-Raise your laptop to eye level.
-Your arms should be relaxed and supported but not elevated
by the arm rests.
-Use an external mouse/keyboard.
-Drink a lot of water, this will force you to get up and take short
bathroom breaks.
-Stretch for a few minutes per every hour sitting.

Due to new rules telemedicine allows Chiropractors to Facetime/Skype which can be used for consultations and instructing on proper ergonomic and stretching is ideal for that application. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. 512-388-7246

Good afternoon,
We are open and scheduling patients with time in between to clean the adjusting table, counters and door handles. I know many people are staying home but we are hoping to stay open to continue to care for everyone we can.

I am also looking at how to schedule for house calls, I do have a portable table if that helps.

Best of luck to everyone during this difficult time.
