Can You Spot the Difference?

These two thermal images show the same area — the foot and lower leg — but with very different stories.

🔥 The first image shows normal blood flow:
Warm colors (red/orange/yellow) indicate strong circulation all the way to the toes.

🧊 The second image?
You’ll notice the toes are blue and green — meaning cooler temperatures and reduced blood flow.

❗Why this matters:

Vibration testing is a quick, non-invasive tool we use to assess nerve function — and it’s part of the Toronto Clinical Neuropathy Scoring System (TCNS), a medically validated way to evaluate neuropathy severity.

🔍 When we place a 128 Hz tuning fork on key points (like the big toe or ankle), we’re checking how well your sensory nerves detect vibration.

Not all neuropathy is the same.

👣 Mononeuropathy means a single nerve is affected — like carpal tunnel or sciatica.
You’ll usually notice symptoms in just one specific area (one hand, one foot, etc.).

🔥 Polyneuropathy, on the other hand, involves multiple nerves — most often in both feet or hands.
It tends to be symmetrical and progressive, starting in the feet and moving upward.

🧠 Why does this matter?
Because the cause, severity, and treatment plan can be very different.

🚨 Health Alert: A new study shows people taking gabapentin for chronic back pain (commonly prescribed for peripheral neuropathy as well) may face up to an 85% higher risk of cognitive impairment and a 40% higher risk of dementia over 10 years.

🧠 Risk is even higher in adults aged 35–49.

📌 PLEASE NOTE: study was observational — doesn’t prove cause, but raises serious concerns.

People who receive six or more prescriptions of gabapentin for lower back pain are at a significantly higher risk of dementia and mild cognitive impairment, a large new study suggests.
