Only female mosquitoes bite because they need the protein in blood to ripen their eggs.

Of roughly 3,500 mosquito species, fewer than 10 % strongly prefer humans over other animals.

A mosquito can detect the carbon dioxide you exhale from more than 30 ft away, then home in on your body heat.

A 2024 study found mosquitoes use a special infrared sensor to zero in on skin-temperature heat after sensing CO₂.

They “taste” your skin with receptors on their feet before deciding to bite.
