Hepatitis is a common yet serious viral infection that causes inflammation of the liver and can lead to chronic disease, or even liver cancer, if left untreated. The World Hepatitis Alliance estimates that nearly 300 million people worldwide are living with hepatitis, but many don’t even know it. Cases can cause stomach pains, fatigue, nausea, and jaundice, or be entirely asymptomatic, making early detection critical to accessing treatment and improving long-term health outcomes.

On July 28, Whittier Street Health Center recognizes World Hepatitis Day in our efforts to curb the spread of infectious diseases, promote access to health screenings and vaccinations, and protect liver health in our community. Please join us for a community event that will offer resources for hepatitis vaccinations, testing, and referrals for care. We hope to see you there!

Did you know that 40% of U.S. adults at high risk for vision loss did not receive an eye exam in the last year? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as many as 93 million Americans are at risk for serious vision loss, but are not accessing timely eye care due to cost, lack of awareness, or limited access to services.

This Healthy Vision Month, we encourage our patients to prioritize their eyesight by scheduling regular vision exams. Eye exams are a critical way to detect eye diseases early, prevent vision loss, and monitor your overall health, especially for people with diabetes or other chronic conditions. At Whittier, our full-service Eye Care Department offers routine eye exams, emergency services, contact lens fittings, and an eyewear dispensary for all of your optical health needs. July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month—a time to shed light on the unique mental health challenges and disparities in mental health care that impact communities of color. A 2024 report from KFF found that among adults experiencing persistent mental health symptoms, Black and Latinx adults were significantly less likely than white adults to report receiving mental health services in the past three years. Barriers like cost, lack of culturally competent providers, and stigma surrounding mental health struggles often make it harder for people in underserved communities to get the care they need. The mental health of racial and ethnic minority groups is further affected by systemic racism, generational trauma, and discrimination, calling for behavioral health interventions that affirm and address the impact of these life experiences on overall well-being.
Whittier’s Behavioral Health Department is committed to providing equitable, accessible, and culturally-responsive mental health care for individuals and families across our diverse community. From individual/group counseling and therapy to substance use treatment, we aim to meet every person where they are on their healing journey with dignity, compassion, and respect. June 27th is National HIV Testing Day—a reminder of the importance of routine screening for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Did you know that between 2021 and 2023, Boston had the highest rate of new HIV diagnoses of all cities in Massachusetts? While HIV is most commonly transmitted through unprotected sexual contact, other factors, such as substance use, unstable housing, and limited access to healthcare, can also increase a person’s risk of infection and transmission. A 2024 report from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health found that new HIV infections in Whittier’s service area are disproportionately impacting people who inject drugs and people experiencing homelessness.
We encourage all members of our community, and especially those at highest risk of HIV infection, to join us on June 27th for our annual HIV Testing Day event. Our Infectious Disease and Special Populations Department will provide on-site, free, and confidential HIV testing to all participants and share health resources and information about HIV treatment and prevention. Getting tested is a simple but powerful step toward protecting your health and the health of your neighbors!

Happy Juneteenth! This important anniversary commemorates June 19th, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas finally learned of their emancipation-- more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Now a national day of remembrance, Juneteenth honors the enduring strength and sacrifices made by Black and African Americans to secure their freedom, and urges us to continue working toward racial justice, health equity, and liberation for all. Whittier Street Health Center wishes you a restful and reflective holiday!

According to the National Alzheimer’s Association, over 7 million Americans over the age of 65 are living with Alzheimer’s disease in 2025. Considered the most common form of dementia, this chronic, neurodegenerative condition gradually causes cognitive impairment and memory loss over time. While age remains the biggest risk factor, research also highlights lifestyle and social factors that increase the risk of Alzheimer’s and impact brain health. Smoking and alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, and poor diet can increase your risk, as can racial and socioeconomic disparities, which often affect disease detection and access to care. No matter your age, we encourage you to take proactive steps against Alzheimer’s by staying mentally and physically active, connecting with loved ones, and supporting efforts to ensure everyone has access to timely diagnosis and quality care.

June is Men’s Health Month, a time to raise awareness about health issues affecting men and boys, promote access to preventive care, and encourage healthy lifestyles. The theme of this year’s Summit, “Transforming the Health and Wellbeing of Men and Boys: From Silent Struggles to Stronger Futures,” reflects Whittier Street Health Center’s steadfast dedication to promoting health equity. The Summit aims to break the silence surrounding men’s health challenges, while fostering strength, healing, and resilience.
Men are more likely to be affected by conditions such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and mental health conditions such as depression and suicidality. Still, many face significant barriers to accessing care, often influenced by social determinants of health, stigma, and cultural norms around masculinity.
In honor of this important cause, please join us on June 28th from 10 AM – 2 PM for our 25th Annual Men’s Health Summit and Father’s Day Celebration! This free community event provides a forum to discuss issues impacting men’s health and shine a spotlight on men who exemplify healthy living, leadership, and service in our community.
