National Latinx AIDs Awareness Day is October 15th—a reminder of the importance of HIV education, prevention, testing, and treatment that centers the needs of Latinx communities. According to AIDsVu, Hispanic/Latinx people account for 27% of new HIV diagnoses annually, but only 17% of new pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) users. Closing this gap in medication access is critical to ensuring all people at risk of HIV can prevent infection, while also addressing the systemic issues that contribute to HIV vulnerability in Latinx populations.
Join us on October 15th for our National Latinx AIDs Awareness Day event to learn more about our free HIV testing services, treatment options, and Whittier’s work to end health disparities in the Latinx community. Whittier Street Health Center’s Day of Service on October 1st was a joyful celebration of community, compassion, and care. We served over 1,500 patients and each received coats, socks, goody bags and health resources. We also provided medical and dental screenings, flu vaccinations and health education. Our volunteers included Dr. Yvonne Greenstreet, CEO of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Arun Skaria, Head of DEI and Corporate Responsibility, Alnylam Pharmaceuticals and more than twenty volunteers from the Alnylam team.

During the kick-off breakfast at the Day of Service, Whittier’s President & CEO, Frederica M. Williams thanked the Alnylam Pharmaceuticals and Whittier team and said “Thank you for being here, thank you for your investment in our mission, and thank you for walking beside us as partners in advancing health equity. By joining us today, by volunteering alongside our team, you are not just lending a hand, you are sending a powerful message to our community: that their lives matter, their health matters, and their dignity matters.”

On behalf of the patients we serve, we extend a heartfelt thank you to the Alnylam Pharmaceuticals team for their significant contributions during our Day of Service. Your time, talents, and commitment to service is greatly appreciated! Thank you for standing with Whittier. Together, we are transforming lives.

National Cholesterol Education Month: Understanding Cholesterol and its impact on heart health

Did you know that high cholesterol is one of the leading risk factors for heart disease? According to the National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, individuals with high cholesterol are twice as likely to develop heart disease compared to those with healthier cholesterol levels. The good news? You have the power to take charge of your cholesterol and protect your heart with better habits. Simple lifestyle changes, from quitting smoking and reducing alcohol intake, to improving your daily diet and exercise routine, can significantly lower your risk for heart disease and other chronic conditions.

This National Cholesterol Education Month, we’re here to provide resources and personalized support for you on your wellness journey. Our nutrition education services, Prescription for Health program, and Wellness Institute will work with you to offer the tools and guidance to help manage your cholesterol and boost your heart health. In 2008, the National Association of People with AIDs declared September 27th as National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDs Awareness Day (NGMHAAD) to highlight the disproportionate impact of HIV/AIDs and its associated stigma on gay men. Whittier Street Health Center recognizes NGMHAAD in our ongoing efforts to reduce incidences of HIV infection in at-risk communities, including men who have s*x with men (MSM) and MSM in racial and ethnic minority groups. In 2022, the CDC estimated that Black/African American and Hispanic/Latino gay and bis*xual men accounted for nearly 73% of new HIV infections in the United States— underscoring the need for culturally-targeted HIV education, prevention, and treatment services that meet the needs of diverse communities.
On September 26th, Whittier Street Health Center will host our National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDs Awareness Day Event to educate about these disparities and provide patients with linkage to HIV testing, treatment, and coordinated care. To learn more about the impact of HIV/AIDs on the LGBTQ+ community and the history of this annual observance, please visit our blog: https://www.wshc.org/national-gay-mens-hiv-aids-awareness-day/

The National Institute for Children’s Research and Policy estimates that approximately 26% of children aged 2 to 5 are overweight or living with obesity in the United States. This Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, we are committed to tackling the social determinants of health, from chronic food insecurity to psychological and economic stress, that compound obesity rates and indicators of poor health from childhood to adulthood. Our Pediatric Healthy Weight Clinic works with children and families to develop healthier lifestyle habits through culturally-tailored nutrition education, case management, and resources to promote physical activity. September is Healthy Aging Month—a time to develop proactive habits and healthy routines to support aging well. Getting older can come with new physical and mental challenges, but it doesn’t have to mean losing out on opportunities for enrichment, activity, and social bonding. At Whittier Street Health Center, we’re proud to support healthy aging not just through clinical care, but through community-based programs that promote human connection and self-empowerment. Our clinic for seniors include chronic disease management programs, healthy aging services, fitness, nutrition education, and social services. These programs have improved our patients’ health and self-reported feelings of boredom, depression, and isolation.
