🚨 We’ve observed an increase in shingles cases across all of our clinics. Shingles is caused by a reactivation of the chickenpox virus and can lead to a painful, blistering rash and long lasting nerve pain if not treated early.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the people most at risk for shingles include adults age 50 and older, individuals with weakened immune systems, and those undergoing treatments such as chemotherapy, long term steroid use, or who have certain chronic or autoimmune conditions.

Starting an antiviral medication as soon as possible, ideally within the first 72 hours of symptoms, can help shorten the illness and lower the risk of complications.
If you notice tingling, burning, pain, or a new rash or blistering on one side of your body, come into the clinic as soon as possible so we can evaluate you and start treatment promptly.

Did you know? The human heart beats about 100,000 times in one day and around 35 million times in a year. Over an average lifetime, the heart beats more than 2.5 billion times, providing the energy to live and love!
Valentine’s Day Heart-Healthy Tips:

1. Stay Active Together: Celebrate with a heart-healthy activity, like a romantic walk, a dance class, or a couples yoga session. Regular physical activity strengthens the heart and improves overall health.

2. Eat Heart-Healthy Meals: Enjoy a Valentine’s dinner that’s good for your heart. Opt for dishes rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fibers, and antioxidants. Think salmon, nuts, berries, and dark leafy greens.

3. Laugh and Love More: Laughter and emotional connections are shown to lower stress levels, which benefits the heart. Spend quality time with your loved ones, share funny stories, and strengthen your emotional bonds.

4. Limit Sugary Sweets: While chocolates are a Valentine’s staple, consider dark chocolate options or fruit-based desserts. Dark chocolate contains antioxidants, and fruits are a great source of vitamins, minerals, and fibers.

4. Quit Smoking: If you or your loved one smokes, Valentine’s Day is a perfect time to quit. Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease. Quitting improves heart health and overall well-being.

Meet Desirae 👋

Desirae is currently in the final two sessions of her BSN RN program and is an aspiring Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. She also holds a Master’s degree in Public Health, with a focus on evidence-based practices and epidemiology.

Her long-term goal is to bridge public health and clinical medicine—because many health challenges begin with social factors and are best addressed through a public health lens.

Desirae began her healthcare journey in 2018 as a medical assistant in a pediatric practice, where she discovered her passion for caring for children and their families.
She is an energetic, friendly, and dedicated team member—and a proud mom to an 18-month-old baby boy. When she’s not working or studying, Desirae loves to travel and explore new foods.

If you have a history of elevated blood pressure, it’s always helpful to record your at-home readings for your doctor. 📋🩺 Properly measuring your blood pressure at home is key to accurate readings. Follow these steps:

✔️ Sit in a quiet place with your feet flat on the floor and back supported.
✔️ Rest your arm on a table at heart level, palm facing up.
✔️ Place the cuff on your bare upper arm (not over clothing). It should be snug but not too tight.
✔️ Stay still and quiet while the cuff inflates—no talking!
✔️ Take two readings, one minute apart, and record the average.

❄️ Slip & Fall Prevention This Winter ❄️

Icy sidewalks, snowy parking lots, and wet entryways can quickly turn into a dangerous fall. As temperatures drop, slips and falls become one of the most common winter injuries—especially for older adults.

Stay safe this winter by:
👟 Wearing shoes or boots with good traction
🧂 Watching for ice on steps, sidewalks, and parking lots
🚶 Taking short, slow steps and keeping your hands free
💡 Using handrails and keeping walkways well lit
🧤 Avoiding rushing—extra layers can affect balance

If you do take a fall or experience pain, swelling, dizziness, or difficulty moving, don’t brush it off. Getting checked early can help prevent more serious injuries.

📞 We’re here to help keep you safe all winter long.

We’re Helping Our Community Navigate Insurance Hurdles
At Emcura, we’ve seen the stress that high deductibles and insurance changes can cause for local families. As a family-owned, physician-run clinic, our mission is to provide expert care—not just "express" care.

If you are facing insurance challenges or simply need transparent pricing, we’re here for you. From now through March 31, 2026, we are offering a special flat-rate package to ensure you get the answers you need without the ER price tag.

The $100 All-In Special Includes:

✅ Comprehensive Provider Visit: A full evaluation by our professional team.

✅ Triple-Threat Testing: Onsite tests for Covid-19, Flu A and B, and Strep.

✅ The Emcura Difference: We manage complex cases onsite. If your illness has turned into a sinus infection or pneumonia, we have Digital X-ray and IM Rocephin (antibiotics) ready to go. Hospital-owned clinics might send you to the ER; we treat you right here.

Help us support our neighbors! If you know a friend or family member who needs reliable, affordable care, please share this post with them.

Visit us in Grosse Pointe Woods / Royal Oak today—No appointment necessary!
