If you’ve ever wrapped leftovers in cling wrap and popped them in the fridge, you’re not alone. 🙋🏻♀️It’s fast, it’s cheap, and it feels convenient. But here’s the truth: that convenience may come at a cost to your health—and your hormones.
Most of us grew up using plastic in our kitchens without a second thought. But now we know better. The chemicals in plastic—like phthalates and BPA—don’t just stay in the plastic. They can leach into our food, especially when heated or even just sitting in contact with fatty or acidic foods (like cheese, tomato sauce, or that favorite pasta salad). And these chemicals? They’re endocrine disruptors—meaning they can interfere with your body’s hormonal balance, contributing to everything from weight gain and fatigue to more serious long-term risks.
As somebody who’s already navigating shifting hormones, sleep, and stress... plastic is not the kind of ingredient I want sneaking into my food.
So what can you do instead?
Thankfully, there are easy, low-tox swaps that don’t require you to become a crunchy Pinterest mom overnight (unless you want to be!):
🥣 1. Flexible Silicone Wrap
Think of this as your new plastic wrap, but better. It stretches, it clings, it’s reusable, and it doesn’t leach harmful chemicals. I use it to cover half-cut produce or wrap up snacks on the go.
🛑 2. Silicone Bowl Lids
Game-changer. These come in different sizes and create a tight seal over bowls, pots, or even open cans. They’re dishwasher safe, super durable, and don’t turn into a tangled mess like plastic wrap always did.
🥪 3. Wax Paper Sandwich Bags
Perfect for school lunches or snack time. They’re compostable, nontoxic, and they don’t leave that plasticky aftertaste. Bonus: they look pretty cute in a lunchbox.
♻️ 4. Beeswax Wrap
A crowd favorite—and for good reason. These wraps mold with the warmth of your hands and are perfect for covering bowls or wrapping up cheese, fruit, or half an avocado.
💡 5. Glass Storage with Lids
It might feel like a splurge at first, but glass is completely non-leaching, lasts forever, and works great for meal prep, leftovers, and freezer storage. I slowly swapped out my mismatched plastic tubs over time.
👣 Start Where You Are
You don’t need to overhaul your kitchen overnight. Just swap one thing this week. Then another next week. That’s how we build a home—and a body—that supports the life we actually want to live.
For me, reducing plastic in my kitchen is never about being perfect. It's about taking control of what I can control in a world full of things I can’t. And when I started making these small swaps, I noticed: my food tasted better, I felt better, and I had peace of mind knowing I was doing something good for both my body and my family.
