If youâre like most people, you hold your breath throughout the day without even realizing it. We take longer inhales than exhales. This can actually increase your stress and anxiety.
4-7â8 breath helps break the fight or flight response, helping to calm the nervous system and control emotional responses. It decreases your heart rate and blood pressure, putting your body in a state of relaxation!
How to:
âď¸Begin with an audible exhale, releasing all tension. (make a âwhooshingâ sound)
âď¸With mouth closed and tongue gently touching the roof of your mouth, take a deep breath in through your nose while mentally counting to four.
âď¸Hold breath for a count of 7
âď¸SLOWLY exhale through your mouth, keeping lips pursed, to a count of 8. (you should hear that âwhooshingâ sound again.
âď¸Repeat this process for 4 cycles.
You can practice this, anytime, anywhere â it only takes a couple of minutes!
â¨â¨Just try 4 cycles and see how you feelâ¨â¨
âď¸Keep yourself in a seated position with your back straight, or if you are trying to sleep, you can do it in bed!
âď¸The more you do this, the better youâll get, and your body will begin to incorporate it into your stress response đ
