Hi my name is Emily Fukas! I am in my last year of pharmacy school at the University of Pittsburgh and will be graduating with my PharmD in May. I am from West Deer and graduated from Deer Lakes High School. I am very excited to be at Palmer Pharmacy for the next few weeks for my rotation! Wyatt, a senior at Deer Lakes enrolled in our Introduction to Pharmacy program, completed a lab focused on properly compounding an ampule-based preparation.

In this activity, students were responsible for verifying the medication order, calculating the required volume, withdrawing the correct amount of medication from the ampule, and injecting it into the IVPB bag.

All medications used in this lab are simulated and for demonstration purposes only.

Pennsylvania pharmacists are expanding their role to help fill gaps in healthcare access. Facing provider shortages, especially in rural areas, independent pharmacists are now offering more healthcare services, from monthly chronic disease assessments and resource referrals to coordinating care and closing care gaps. Under the new MOMENTUM program, pharmacists are paid for providing these services, allowing them to spend more time supporting patients, providing overdose-prevention education, and connecting them to things like food assistance and transportation resources. Pharmacies are often easier to access than doctors’ offices, with Medicaid members visiting pharmacies far more frequently, making them ideal for expanding patient care. The shift is helping both patients and independent pharmacies struggling to stay open, with plans to keep evolving these services to meet the needs of healthcare consumers.

Check on your family and friends 🧡

If you have ever thought of ending your life, then you know the feeling behind the words echoed by Richard Russel on August 10th, 2018. Behind the jokes and the laughs, are tiny inflictions of typically unspoken “self truths” that, to those who have experienced, say to themselves out loud in the moments before we choose life or death.

Addiction can feel like that too. Not just based on the relationship between the addiction disease and mental illness, but because of the self hate and self isolating thoughts that show up over and over again, both in activity and recovery.

But I just want to say this, to all of those who see this that are suffering from something, you are not a burden. You are not wasting anyone’s time. You are not a disappointment.

Whether you believe it or not, there is always someone out there rooting for you to want to get the help you need, or take the actions you need to get you to where you want to be in life, and light.

Naloxone only reverses overdoses caused by opioids like fentanyl. But because fentanyl might be unknowingly present alongside medetomidine, co***ne, or counterfeit pills, you should always give naloxone for any suspected overdose. Even if you’re not sure what the person may have taken, naloxone won’t hurt them.

When in doubt, give it. It could save a life.
