🧠 Why Repetition Matters in Speech Therapy (and How We Make It Fun!)
When children are learning new speech sounds, they’re not just memorizing words — they are developing new motor patterns (just like learning to ride a bike or kick a ball).
Speech sounds are movement patterns the brain and mouth must learn to execute accurately and automatically.
📍 Principle of Motor Learning:
Research shows that children need a lot of practice — often 100 or more practice trials — to establish a new motor pattern for a sound.
That might sound like a lot… but that’s where we get creative! 🎉
At our clinic, our Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) use:
✔️ Clickers and counters — to track trials to track repetitions needed for motor learning
✔️ Game-based repetitions — meaningful opportunities to practice sounds many times without it feeling like “drill work”
✔️ Movement-based practice — incorporating gross motor activity between trials
Kids don’t learn speech sounds by “trying harder” — they learn by moving their mouths again and again in the right way.
💙 If you have questions or would like to get started, ask your child’s pediatrician about a therapy referral.

Happy Occupational Therapy Month! This month, we celebrate the powerful impact of pediatric occupational therapy and the incredible kids and families we have the honor of serving every day.
We love getting to celebrate those meaningful wins alongside families. Lately, those wins have looked like:

✨ Learning to eat and enjoy a wider variety of foods
✨Reducing presence of oral habits
✨ Implementing feeding strategies to successfully avoid the need for tube feeding
✨Building the skills needed for a smooth transition to kindergarten
✨ Strengthening sensory and motor skills for play, school, and self-care
✨ Integrating primitive reflexes that may be impacting development and coordination
✨Learning strategies to reduce presence of meltdowns

It is an honor to partner with families to help their children thrive. If you have any questions or want to learn more about how to further support your child, we’re here to help. 💬

🧠 What If My Child Skipped Crawling?
First — take a breath 💙
Skipping crawling is more common than you think, and it doesn’t mean your child is “behind.”
That said, crawling plays an important role in helping the brain and body learn to work together.
Crawling supports:
• Coordination between the right and left sides of the body
• Core and shoulder strength
• Eye tracking and visual skills
• Body awareness and motor planning
When crawling is skipped, some children may later show:
• Difficulty with coordination or balance
• Trouble using both sides of the body together
• Challenges with visual-motor tasks (like catching or handwriting)
The good news?
✨ These skills can still be built later through movement and play.
Thanks to neuroplasticity, the brain can form new connections when it’s given the right movement experiences.
Through play, movement, and repetition, OT and PT can help support the skills the brain and body need to work together.

👶 Is Your Baby Always Looking One Way?

You might be noticing your baby:
➡️ Prefers turning their head to one side
➡️ Has a flat spot on their head
➡️ Struggles with tummy time
➡️ Keeps their head tilted

These can be signs of torticollis or plagiocephaly—and the good news is… early treatment works REALLY well.

Research shows that when we start early (ideally before 3–4 months), most babies improve with simple, conservative therapy like:
✔️ Positioning strategies
✔️ Tummy time progression
✔️ Gentle stretching & strengthening
✔️ Parent education you can use at home

The earlier you start, the easier it is to correct
(and often helps avoid more involved treatments later!)

This is common.
This is treatable.
And you’re not doing anything wrong.

Not sure if what you’re seeing is typical? Give us a call at (270)238-3782—we’re always happy to help you figure out next steps.

March 20th is Plagiocephaly & Torticollis Awareness Month 💛

Did you know early intervention can make a big difference in your baby’s development? Plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome) and torticollis (tightness in the neck muscles) are common — and treatable — conditions when identified early.

Our pediatric therapy team is here to support families with compassionate, individualized care that helps little ones grow, move, and thrive.

If you have questions about your child’s head shape, head tilt, or motor development, we’re here to help. Early support matters. 💙

🧠 Why Crawling Matters for Brain Development
Not all crawling is the same.
Criss-cross crawling (using opposite arm and leg together) plays a unique role in how a child’s brain develops.
When a child moves:
➡️ right arm with left knee
➡️ left arm with right knee
the brain’s two hemispheres are required to communicate and coordinate through the corpus callosum — the structure that connects the right and left sides of the brain.
✨ This cross-lateral movement supports:
• Bilateral coordination
• Eye tracking and visual skills
• Body awareness and spatial skills
• Integration of both sides of the brain
• Foundations for learning and attention
Other crawling styles, like belly crawling or moving one side at a time, still have value — but they don’t provide the same high-level, balanced brain stimulation as true criss-cross crawling.
👶 Why this matters
Criss-cross crawling helps the brain learn how to:
✔️ Coordinate both sides of the body
✔️ Process movement efficiently
✔️ Build foundations for future skills like reading, writing, and coordinated play
At OT and PT, we don’t focus on milestones just for timing — we look at how movement shapes the brain.
💙 Crawling isn’t just about getting from point A to point B.
It’s about building the connections that support lifelong learning and movement.

Why Balance Matters (More Than You Think)
You may not think about the cerebellum very often, but this tiny part of the brain is a major player in your child’s development. Despite its small size, the cerebellum contains a huge number of neurons and plays a big role in how children learn to move and grow.
Here’s why it matters:
✨ The cerebellum helps children balance, coordinate movement, and adjust posture — skills they use every time they sit, walk, climb, or play.
✨ It’s also involved in motor learning, helping kids fine-tune movements so they become smoother and more automatic over time.
✨ Research shows that as the brain develops, cerebellar connections support both motor skills and broader developmental abilities, including attention and the ability to adapt to new challenges.
Balance doesn’t just help kids stay upright — it supports:
• Walking on uneven surfaces
• Catching and throwing
• Jumping, hopping, and running
• Visual-motor skills (eyes and body working together)
• Confidence and independence during play
When balance is weak or delayed, children may appear clumsy, avoid certain activities, or struggle with coordination — and that could reflect a developing system that needs support.
👐 OT & PT help build strong balance skills through play-based movement, strengthening both body and brain so kids can move confidently and safely.

Why Tummy Time Matters for Your Baby
Tummy time helps your baby build the strength and skills they need to move and grow.
✨ What it does:
• Strengthens neck, shoulder, back & core muscles
• Helps babies learn to lift and turn their head
• Supports rolling, sitting, crawling, and future movement skills
• Reduces pressure on the back of the head (helps prevent flat spots)
• Helps babies explore their world and use their eyes in new ways
📅 When to start:
You can begin tummy time as soon as baby comes home from the hospital — even for short moments during awake, alert times.
⏱️ How much:
• Start with short bursts (30 seconds–a few minutes) several times a day.
• As babies get stronger, work up to a total of ~30 minutes or more throughout the day.
📍 Supervision is key:
Tummy time should always be done while awake and watched!
💡 Tips to make it easier:
• Use a rolled towel under the chest to prop baby up
• Place toys, mirrors, or your face at eye level to engage them
• Do tummy time after a diaper change or nap so baby isn’t too tired
• Try tummy-to-tummy time on your chest for comfort and bonding
🤝 Why it’s worth it:
Tummy time plays an important role in motor development and strength — the foundation for big milestones like rolling, crawling, and sitting independently.
If your baby seems uncomfortable or avoids tummy time, small, frequent sessions and caregiver support can help them build tolerance — and therapy can support families who need extra strategies 💙

🍼 Plagiocephaly is not just cosmetic.
It often tells us something about how a baby is moving.
🧠 Studies show that when therapists address the movement first, head shape and overall development often improve together.
