✨ Surviving the Holiday Season ✨
The holiday season can be joyful, but it can also feel overwhelming, emotionally heavy, or even triggering. If you’re noticing stress, burnout, or old wounds resurfacing, you are not alone — and there are effective, evidence-based strategies that can help you move through this season with more ease and support.
Here are some KTT-approved tools to help you get through this Holiday Season:
🎯 1. Set Realistic Expectations
Check in with your thoughts when the pressure builds. Are you holding yourself or others to unrealistic standards? Gently challenge the “shoulds” and replace them with balanced, compassionate self-talk. Change you "shoulds" to "I would like to " or "I want to" and then assess if you have the space on your "plate" to take on those tasks.
🧘 2. Practice Mindful Grounding
When emotions spike, your body may need help returning to the present moment. Try the 5-4-3-2-1 sensory technique or slow diaphragmatic breathing to calm your nervous system. Pay attention to how your body sensations, emotions, and behaviors are being influenced by the environment around you.
🛑 3. Use Boundaries as Self-Care
It’s okay to decline invitations, adjust plans, or leave gatherings early. Boundaries protect your emotional bandwidth and allow you to show up where it truly matters.
🗓️ 4. Plan for Triggers
If the holidays bring up grief, family conflict, or past trauma, identify potential triggers and create a coping plan. This may include grounding skills, supportive contacts, boundaries, or exit strategies. Go into the Holiday's prepared to set yourself up for emotional regulation.
💛 5. Build in Daily Rest
Even 10 minutes of intentional rest — deep breathing, stretching, journaling, or quiet — helps regulate your stress response and prevent overwhelm. The Holidays are so very busy, we are not machines or computers that can run constantly; even our devices need to charge. Find intentional time to recharge and rest, maybe even set boundaries with yourself and others to make that possible.
📞 6. Reach Out for Support
Connection is a protective factor. Talk with trusted friends, family, or your therapist. You don’t have to manage everything alone.
No matter how you’re entering this holiday season, remember that your feelings are valid and your wellbeing matters. If you need additional support, our therapists are here for you. 🌟
