This is a reminder during Black History Month...

Be sure that when you share the information about the history of Black Midwifery in this country, that you speak on it correctly. Black Midwifery in this country is NOT rooted in slavery. It is NOT rooted in Black folk not being allowed into hospitals. Black Midwifery is part of an ANCIENT, LONG HISTORY of Midwifery SKILL, PRACTICE, ART AND TRADITION that has been passed on from woman to woman for generations.
The transatlantic slave trade captured and kidnapped farmers, healers, iron workers, mathematicians, midwives and more. The MAAFA did not kill these skills. Our midwifery tradition is NOT a REACTION to oppression. Our herbal traditions are NOT a REACTION to oppression either. What original people of the earth don't have a healing tradition? Hospitals, ACOG, AMA, are recent constructs in human history. SO, of course, we have our own healing ways. It does our people a great disservice to think that everything we do comes from not being "allowed" to do something else. Let's all do our part to change this narrative.

Words by me.
