We love our nurses year-round, but May is special. As National Nurses Month, it’s a great time to share why they’re such an important part of our organization!

Here at Coastal Urgent Care of Ruston, and throughout our family of clinics, we are so grateful for the knowledge, compassion and skill our nurses bring to work every single day. Our nurses provide exceptional care to patients of all ages and with every imaginable medical need. Never knowing whether the next visit will be someone with a simple flu or a serious wound, they’re prepared, poised and ready to give personalized, professional help as quickly as possible.

Here at Coastal Urgent Care of Ruston, we couldn't do what we do without the work of our incredible doctors. As National Physicians Week comes to a close, we're shouting it from the rooftops! 📣

From treating our patients 🩺 to advising our administrative team, creating our medical policies to mentoring other providers, our doctors are key to achieving strong healthcare and business outcomes. We are so grateful for their leadership, collaboration, and integrity! 🙌

This year's Physicians Week theme, "Unity in Healthcare," highlights the importance of collaboration across the whole healthcare system. 🏥 Working in urgent care, our doctors fill a unique place in that system. The answer: it could be any of these things (or strep throat, or the screaming you did at that concert over the weekend 🎤)! Unfortunately, there's a lot of crossover when it comes to the symptoms of many common illnesses, especially this time of year! 😩

February is both Black History✊🏾 and American Heart❤️ Month. What better time to pay homage to Black pioneers in cardiology?!

Black people have made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of medicine, pioneering surgeries, techniques, research and treatments while facing many barriers. We can only highlight a very small number of them here, but we hope to encourage you to explore more on your own about Black practitioners whose work improved medicine for all of us. 🩺💡

🫀 Daniel Hale Williams, MD, performed one of the first successful open-heart surgeries in 1893.

🏥 Vivien Theodore Thomas, a former carpenter who in 1944 co-developed a shunt to correct a congenital heart condition in babies. While his white colleagues were credited with the invention, Thomas did not receive recognition until more than 30 years later.

👩🏾‍⚕️When Myra Adele Logan, MD performed open-heart surgery in 1943, she was the first woman (and ninth person) to do so. She also developed tests that detected breast cancer tumors earlier.

🩸In the 1930s, Charles R. Drew, MD developed blood storage techniques that made longer-term storage possible. He became known as the "Father of the Blood Bank."

These Black medical providers created techniques that still save millions of lives and paved the way for advancements that save millions more. In their honor, we hope you will talk to your primary care doctor about improving your heart health at your next appointment! ❤️‍🩹🗓️
