• Manage chronic pain: PT can help decrease pain and stiffness, allowing you to participate in activities you enjoy.
• Boost strength and flexibility: This improves daily tasks and overall well-being.

Lower back got you down? Lumbar support pillows can offer temporary relief, but for lasting improvement, consider physical therapy!
Lumbar support can help:
• Improve posture while sitting
• Reduce discomfort during long periods of sitting
BUT...
It often addresses the symptom (pain), not the root cause.
Physical therapy can help you:
• Identify underlying issues causing pain
• Strengthen core muscles for better back support
• Improve flexibility and range of motion
• Develop long-term strategies to prevent future pain
Think of lumbar support as a temporary brace, and physical therapy as the workout that strengthens you from the inside out!

It's National Foam Rolling Day! But what exactly is a foam roller good for?
This handy tool can be a great addition to your physical therapy routine! Here's how:
• Self-massage: Foam rolling helps target tight muscles and improve flexibility, aiding in your PT exercises.
• Pain relief: Regular rolling can loosen those trigger points and knots, reducing muscle soreness after PT sessions.
• Improved circulation: Rolling can boost blood flow, bringing essential nutrients to your muscles and speeding up recovery.
Foam rolling is a great at-home tool to complement your PT sessions! Ask your physical therapist how to incorporate it into your routine.

In Star Wars the force can be a good thing; in physical therapy force is a bad thing.

You’ve heard Dr. Jerry say in our Therapy Thursday episodes (and in person if you’ve been treated by him) that we never want you to force yourself into pain when doing stretches and exercises because stretching into pain can cause more trauma which can cause more injury and pain. If you need help with what stretches and exercises to do please see our At Home Exercises playlist (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLEUbbdokGgwRq1zNbVrPYlCDiUkKyDQ6Rfor) for 70+ one minute videos of stretches and exercises you can do at home; or come see us to let us help you love your life.
Here are some facts about stretching to help you:

Stretches to combat a lack of movement
If you sit at a desk all day, you may be doing your posture a disservice. Many sedentary days can lead to neck and shoulder problems and tight muscles in the hips. (We have videos about workplace ergonomics on our YouTube channel)
Get out of your chair and move around for a few minutes every hour.
Focus on stretches that move the neck, shoulders, and hips, in particular. Even simple movements such as putting your arms above your head or squeezing your shoulders back while sitting at your desk are helpful.

Stretch before you exercise
Stretching your muscles for 30 seconds before exercising will help increase blood flow to the muscles and warm them up, reducing the chance of injury while exercising

Select the correct activity level for your current fitness
We get it, sometimes you see a viral video of someone doing something great and get inspired; maybe it’s someone that overcame an injury to do American Ninja Warrior or run a marathon or something. Having goals is a good thing but goals take time to work up to and forcing yourself towards that end goal faster than your body is ready can cause injury which will make attaining that goal take even longer. Start light and take it slow, easing into increasing levels of difficulty as you’re able to comfortably, remember that even 1% progress daily ads up to 365% progress over a year.

Can't sleep? Don't just toss and turn!
Did you know a physical therapist can help you improve your sleep? Here's how:

• Pain relief: Pain can be a major sleep disruptor. PTs can address pain in your back, neck, and joints, leading to a more comfortable night's rest.
• Better posture: PTs can assess your posture and recommend exercises to improve alignment, reducing aches that keep you awake.
• Relaxation techniques: Some PTs teach relaxation techniques like breathing exercises to calm your mind and body before bed.

On top of PT, your mattress is key! The wrong one can cause pressure points and pain.

Think about your sleep style:

• Side sleepers: Look for a mattress that cradles your curves.
• Back sleepers: Choose a mattress with good lumbar support.
• Stomach sleepers: Opt for a firmer mattress to keep your spine aligned.

Feel like you have the weight of the world on your shoulders?
Shoulder pain can be a horrible thing.
The shoulder is a complex joint, and with all that movement comes vulnerability to injury. Whether you're a weekend warrior or feeling the twinges of everyday life, physical therapy can be your path to recovery.

Here's how a PT can get you back in the game:

• Reduce pain and inflammation: Let's get you feeling better
Improve range of motion: Reach for the stars (or at least that top shelf) again!
• Strengthen the muscles that support your joint: Stability is key to preventing future injuries.
• Improve flexibility: Move with ease and confidence.

Don't wait for the pain to worsen! A physical therapist can create a personalized plan to address your specific injury and get you back to doing what you love.
