In 1980, Baruj Benacerraf, M.D., received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

His Hispanic heritage meant years of difficulty being accepted into medical school and struggling to find work in a lab, but he was determined to work in the medical field to help others.

Dr. Benacerraf’s persistence and dedication paid off! His team's discovery of genetic structures that control immune system responses was groundbreaking.

From Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 (Hispanic Heritage Month), AMSURG honors the contributions of Hispanic and Latino healthcare leaders like Dr. Benacerraf.

Their work reminds us of what matters most: putting people first, working together and always striving to make healthcare better for our communities.

Did you know in 1982 Dr. Claudia L. Thomas became the first board-certified Black female orthopedic surgeon in the United States? Dr. Thomas graduated with a degree in Black Studies from Vassar College. Following medical school at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Thomas entered the Yale Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program.
