Whole foods help. We took a crack at growing some of our own this year. Vermont's "monsoon season" hasn't helped, but we got a humble harvest out of the deal. And it's still producing. Not sure all the tomatoes'll ripen. Got a diabetic-friendly recipe for fried green tomatoes? We're in the market for one. Be well. Take care of you. Celebrate growth - in the garden and in life.

If your coach or nutritionist or doctor is preaching about complete avoidance of sugar in answer to your health improvement goals, may I recommend walking away? Or at least expanding your circle? It's just not that simple. But it's really not hard, either. Living well with diabetes is so personalized, and as I've seen, best served by balance. There's room for everything in ideal proportion. I promise. And just for fun, here are 2 cute dogs ready to play ball. :)

Less sugar. Less salt. More . Fall (or almost Fall) encourages me to go wild and do things like toss a bit of cinnamon in the coffee grounds (immediately noticed by the gentleman in the house because he doesn't miss a trick) and cook meals that turn up the heat ... to keep us warm inside. is a infused concoction and it's a delight. Ever have? Do you like? Welcome to almost . Where it's not all but it has its place for sure. Especially because it adds without and . Score!

Coffee ice. Iced coffee. This was the first "change one thing you do every day," thing that started me on the path to better health. There are some that may say coffee's no good, or that cream has sugar you know or whatever. But I say everything fits in moderation. So enjoy it. This is how I do. I freeze the little bit at the bottom of the pot and add to my cuppa for a quick undiluted-by-watery-ice summer joe, add light cream, and go. Enjoy July! And cheers!

Always remember ...

"And always remember that people's judgments about you are none of your business. Lastly, remember what W. C. Fields had to say on this point: “It ain't what they call you; it's what you answer to.” Actually, don't even bother answering. Just keep doing your thing.”

“She’s really unhealthy - has diabetes.” I thought this was interesting. Statement of a co-worker not directed toward me. A condition to be managed, but not one that necessarily means one is “unhealthy.” A ponder. A perception. Something to work into my own narrative about . If you have thoughts on this, share them please.

I dunno. How busy are we? And do we need all this waste for a smoothie? Maybe. But it’s not for me. I add fruits and veggies to my day by grabbing an apple or a handful of berries in under one minute. Works like a charm. Perhaps I’m just not their demographic. I choose not this product. You?

Yes, diabetics can have cereal. Pump up the protein with nuts, nut butters and other inclusions - like roasted chickpeas. These are a fave. Keep the nutrition balanced with healthy fruits and enjoy. And to anyone who says you can't have cereal when you have diabetes, politely decline to engage or simply say, "everything in balance."

Just as I prefer my eggs as ingredients (which works too - they don't disappear into the ether when you cook with them) I like my avocados when they're in stuff. Like guacomole (as a spread, yes please) and in a smoothie - absolutely. I knew they had fiber and good fats, but I learned even more in my looking around for info today. So if you're seeking out a super food (not a superfood - that term is a bit overused I believe) - try avocado. It's a super duper delicious and nutritous food. And a great inclusion in a life with diabetes.
