“CAN I HAVE MY FIRST BABY AT HOME?! IS IT SAFE?!”🌿 YOU BET YOUR BUTTONS!! Being a first time birthing parent doesn’t change your risk level. And it doesn’t mean you’re “more likely to fail or transfer”. Last year, I actually had more multips (people who have already had at least one baby) transfer for a multitude of reasons, than first time parents when comparing percentages.
“SHOULDN’T MY PELVIS BE PROVEN? WHAT IF MY BABY’S HEAD IS TOO BIG?!”🌿 I’m sorry, what? Nope! Who exactly are we proving our pelvis to? Pelvis Assessors Incorporated?? This comment actually really gets my goat (don’t ask, I’m from Maine!). Birth is vastly, more times than not, a perfectly natural, normal and innate process. True CPD (cephalic/head pelvic disproportion) does occur. The incidence rate is extremely rare. 1/2500. That’s plenty uncommon enough that we don’t need any proving of the pelvis. Lords! Additionally the body delivers a hormone called relaxin that helps the hips and pelvis open, as well as the moulding of the fetal head to allow the perfect exit.
“WHAT IF I NEED PAIN RELIEF? I’VE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE!”🌿 It’s true that the most common reason for transfer for first time laboring people is pain relief or medicine used for therapeutic rest. A lot of times it’s that labor is long and confusing the first time. Early labor is exciting, you’re up all night anticipating the big event. And then, when labor becomes strong and powerful, you’re a bit pooped out. So, we go in. That’s ok! These are all tools and options that are available if we need them! And lucky for us, the seacoast has a pretty great support system in regards to labor and birth in the hospital! Bonus, your midwife goes with you to maintain that continued love and support! 🌿 OTHER BENEFITS INCLUDE: patience in labor and birth to allow things to happen naturally (no thanks Friedman, take your curve and shove it!) Frequent postpartum care, thorough informed choice & autonomous decision making, “practice family” support, lifetime care, water labor & birth, provider relationships built on trust & compassion and gentle hands on family centered care.🌿
