💬 From dominating conversations to retreating into video games, social challenges are common – but they’re often tied to social executive function skills.

Kids with ADHD often struggle with friendships, not because they don’t care, but because certain social skills don’t come intuitively. 🧠💛

From perspective-taking to responding effectively in different situations, these “social executive function skills” are key to connecting with peers.

✅ Model your thoughts,
✅ Encourage small social wins,
✅ Practice situational awareness,
✅ Celebrate effort, not perfection.

Every small step helps your child build confidence and stronger friendships. If you want support navigating your child’s social challenges, we’re here to help.

In today’s world of read receipts, location apps, and constant online connection, overprotective parenting has taken on a new form, one where teens end up monitoring themselves and each other. 📱

Giving children freedom in the real world, while staying supportive and connected, helps them develop independence, resilience, and social skills that screens alone can’t teach.

Connection doesn’t have to mean control. Teens grow best when they know they’re trusted and valued, even when they’re exploring the world on their own. 🌿

📵 A short social media detox can improve mental health, even in just one week.

A recent study found that young adults who reduced their social media use for one week experienced:
• 16% less anxiety
• 24% less depression
• 14% better sleep

Participants didn’t give up their phones entirely; they just spent less time on social media. And the mental health benefits were significant.
✨ What helped:
• Setting specific times to check social apps
• Making apps harder to access (logging out, removing from home screen)
• Reducing nighttime scrolling
• Replacing scrolling with movement or time outside

The takeaway? It’s not the screen–it’s how we’re using it.

If social media feels draining lately, a short, intentional break might be a gentle place to start.

April is Autism Awareness Month, and it’s an opportunity to move beyond awareness toward deeper understanding and acceptance.

Supporting individuals with autism starts with listening, learning, and creating environments where people feel seen, respected, and supported in ways that align with their needs.

At M Kim O’Connor & Associates, we believe in meeting individuals and families where they are and providing care that is thoughtful, flexible, and grounded in understanding.

If you or your family are navigating autism-related challenges, we’re here to support you.

In clinical practice, many adolescents and adults with ADHD describe noticeable shifts in attention, mood, and emotional regulation across different phases of the menstrual cycle. While research in this area is still developing, lived experience and emerging findings suggest that hormonal changes may meaningfully influence cognitive and emotional functioning.

Recognizing these patterns can be an important step in reducing self-criticism and supporting more personalized coping strategies. Tracking symptom fluctuations, adjusting expectations during more challenging phases, and integrating this awareness into treatment planning can help individuals feel more empowered and understood.

Greater research and clinical dialogue around the intersection of neurodevelopmental conditions and hormonal cycles may ultimately improve care and outcomes.

Feeling valued and helping others feel valued are among the most powerful tools for lifelong well-being. 🌱

When we nurture a sense of mattering in children, starting from infancy, we set the stage for healthier, happier futures. And when caregivers themselves feel significant and supported, that sense of mattering spreads even further: to children, families, and communities.

From small daily gestures to supportive policies, every action matters. Let’s build ecosystems where everyone knows: you matter, and so do they. 💛

Words matter 💛 Sometimes we want to help, but the wrong phrases can actually hurt someone living with anxiety or depression.

Here are 4 things to avoid saying, and what to say instead.

Parent prompt: Tonight, try checking in with your loved one with a simple:
‘I’m here for you, do you want to talk or just sit together?’

Being present and validating their feelings can be the most comforting support.

We all procrastinate sometimes,  but when it becomes a pattern, it can affect not just our productivity, but our mood, confidence, and overall well-being.

The good news? Procrastination isn’t a personality flaw; it’s a coping strategy we can unlearn.

Here are 9 small mindset shifts that help you get unstuck

Procrastination isn’t laziness; it’s often our brain’s way of managing stress, fear, or overwhelm.

By shifting from self-criticism to self-compassion, breaking goals into smaller steps, and learning to sit with discomfort, we can rebuild motivation and confidence over time.

✨ Remember: you don’t have to do this alone.
If procrastination is affecting your mood, work, or relationships, reach out.
We can help you establish new habits and regain control. 💙

✨ Building confidence starts with everyday life skills ✨

From ordering their own meals to planning a family dinner, these small moments teach kids a great deal - communication, responsibility, problem-solving, and confidence. 💛

Encourage them to try new things, make mistakes, and learn along the way. Independence grows one skill (and one small step) at a time. 🌿

A study of over 60,000 U.S. middle & high school students found a strong link between to***co use and poor mental health.

🔹 Teens who used e-cigarettes or traditional to***co were more likely to report symptoms of depression & anxiety.
🔹 Dual users (those who used both) had the highest odds of mental health struggles.
🔹 While this study doesn’t prove to***co causes depression or anxiety, the connection is clear: both issues can fuel each other.

Why it matters:
Adolescence is a pivotal period for emotional development. To***co use not only harms physical health, but it may also deepen mental health challenges.

Support matters. Anti-to***co programs + accessible mental health care can make a difference. We are here to support your teen.

💬 What do you think is the most significant barrier to helping teens quit?

Why We Must Embrace Teen Emotions 💛
Teenagers feel deeply–Joy, frustration, anxiety, excitement. And that intensity? It’s normal and healthy.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Lisa Damour reminds us:
Teens’ emotions are informational–they tell them what feels right, safe, or meaningful.

Experiencing both positive and negative feelings fosters growth and resilience.

When teens open up, listening + empathy is often all they need.

Practical tips for parents & caregivers:

1️⃣ Be a steady presence when your teen shares their feelings.
2️⃣ Let them verbalize emotions–it reduces distress on its own.
3️⃣ Ask questions curiously, not critically.
4️⃣ Offer empathy, not just solutions.
5️⃣ Support them in navigating technology: no devices in bedrooms, and have open conversations about online life.

The bottom line: strengthening relationships and understanding your teen’s emotional world is one of the most powerful ways to prevent and reduce stress, anxiety, and mental health struggles. 💛
