A study of over 60,000 U.S. middle & high school students found a strong link between to***co use and poor mental health.

🔹 Teens who used e-cigarettes or traditional to***co were more likely to report symptoms of depression & anxiety.
🔹 Dual users (those who used both) had the highest odds of mental health struggles.
🔹 While this study doesn’t prove to***co causes depression or anxiety, the connection is clear: both issues can fuel each other.

Why it matters:
Adolescence is a pivotal period for emotional development. To***co use not only harms physical health, but it may also deepen mental health challenges.

Support matters. Anti-to***co programs + accessible mental health care can make a difference. We are here to support your teen.

💬 What do you think is the most significant barrier to helping teens quit?

Why We Must Embrace Teen Emotions 💛
Teenagers feel deeply–Joy, frustration, anxiety, excitement. And that intensity? It’s normal and healthy.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Lisa Damour reminds us:
Teens’ emotions are informational–they tell them what feels right, safe, or meaningful.

Experiencing both positive and negative feelings fosters growth and resilience.

When teens open up, listening + empathy is often all they need.

Practical tips for parents & caregivers:

1️⃣ Be a steady presence when your teen shares their feelings.
2️⃣ Let them verbalize emotions–it reduces distress on its own.
3️⃣ Ask questions curiously, not critically.
4️⃣ Offer empathy, not just solutions.
5️⃣ Support them in navigating technology: no devices in bedrooms, and have open conversations about online life.

The bottom line: strengthening relationships and understanding your teen’s emotional world is one of the most powerful ways to prevent and reduce stress, anxiety, and mental health struggles. 💛

Not all lies are created equal–especially for kids with ADHD. 🤔

Impulsivity, insecurity, or attention-seeking behavior can lead to stretching the truth becoming a common practice. Instead of punishing every fib:
✨ Explain the consequences of lying
✨ Teach them to pause before answering
✨ Stay calm when a lie happens
✨ Offer a chance to “truth check”
✨ Reward honesty when it shows up
Even “white lies” can be a teaching moment about empathy and social awareness. 💛

Helping your child navigate honesty isn’t about perfection–it’s about guidance, understanding, and encouragement.

We are here to help you along your parenting journey.

Did you know your gut and brain are constantly in conversation?

This connection, known as the gut-brain axis, means that what we eat doesn’t just affect our digestion; it can also influence our mood, focus, and emotional balance.

When our gut microbiome (the community of bacteria living in our digestive system) is out of balance, often from stress, poor diet, or lack of sleep, it can trigger inflammation and affect neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine.

Over time, this can contribute to anxiety, low mood, and fatigue.

That’s why we view food as one of the foundational pillars of mental health, alongside sleep, physical activity, and social connection. By nourishing your body, you’re also supporting your brain’s ability to regulate mood and manage stress.

✨ At M Kim O’Connor & Associates, we help clients interrupt this vicious cycle, building healthy routines that strengthen both emotional and physical well-being.

“Connection is medicine.”

The science is clear - human connection is as vital to our well-being as sleep, nutrition, or exercise. Yet for many individuals and families, especially those navigating ADHD or mental health challenges, disconnection and isolation can quietly take a toll.

When community is present, everything changes: shame turns into understanding, burnout into support, and overwhelm into hope.

At M Kim O’Connor & Associates, we help clients build stronger connections to themselves, their loved ones, and the world around them. 💛
✨ Reach out. We can help.

Even small mindful practices can help families and individuals reset after the holiday rush. Try these simple grounding techniques together:

1️⃣ 3 Deep Breaths: Pause and take three slow, deep breaths. Notice the inhale, the exhale, and how your body feels during this process.

2️⃣ Gratitude Moment: Go around the room and share one thing you’re grateful for right now.

3️⃣ Mindful Observation: Pick one thing in your environment, a plant, a picture, or even a sound, and notice it fully for 30 seconds.
✨ Tip: Make these practices a quick daily ritual.

Even one minute can help everyone feel calmer, more connected, and ready for the year ahead.

A gentle reminder…

Your children learn self-love not just from what you say, but from what you show. 💛

When you speak kindly to yourself, set boundaries, and honor your feelings, you’re teaching them to do the same.

Small acts of self-care, patience, and compassion ripple out–they see it, they feel it, they learn it. So today, be gentle with yourself. Show yourself love… and watch how it shapes the little hearts around you. 🌱

Recent research indicates that reliance on social media and AI has contributed to declines in face-to-face communication skills, writing, and speaking abilities, particularly among teens and young adults. 💬

Many parents notice how challenging in-person connection has become. Growing up with screens has made communicating faster, but not necessarily deeper.

In therapy, we slow things down. We help young people rediscover how to express themselves clearly and confidently, using skills that can get lost amid digital noise.

Through calm, supportive sessions, teens learn to put their feelings into words. Misunderstandings and reactive behaviors often start to ease. Parents notice their kids becoming more thoughtful, patient, and comfortable sharing what’s going on inside.

We also practice real-world skills, like active listening, empathy, and compromise, through role-playing exercises. These help teens navigate conflicts at home or with peers without retreating to phones or social media. Over time, their confidence in real-world communication strengthens relationships everywhere: at school, work, and, most importantly, at home. ❤️

Sleep is one of the most powerful tools we have for emotional well-being — and it’s something I talk about with almost every client. 💤💛

A few gentle reminders:
 • Our teens need more sleep than we often realize.
 • A calming nighttime routine really does make a difference.
 • And yes, a little weekend catch-up sleep can actually help mood and energy.

Small habits add up. If you or your child are struggling with sleep, you’re not alone, and support is available. 🤍

Research shows a strong connection between anxiety and depression in young people. A study of 1.7 million participants ages 5–22, published in JAMA Network Open, found that nearly 40% of youth with anxiety also had a diagnosis of depression. Rates of both disorders have been rising in recent years.

This overlap matters because co-occurring symptoms can intensify distress and complicate daily functioning — but with the right support, young people can recover and thrive.

If you’re noticing signs of anxiety or depression, don’t hesitate to reach out. Evidence-based support is available.

Today’s teen boys are growing up in a digital world that can feel both connected and isolating.

Amid gaming chats, group threads, and social media, many young men are quietly struggling – with loneliness, anger, or confusion about what it means to belong.

As parents and caregivers, it’s not about monitoring every move, but about staying curious, present, and connected.

💭 What to look for:
👉Withdrawing from friends or hobbies
👉Big changes in sleep, eating, or mood
👉Losing interest in things they once loved
👉Spending long hours online in isolating or extreme spaces

💚 How to start the conversation:
👉Ask open-ended questions (“How does that app work?”)
👉Let him teach you – even if you already know
👉Keep the door open, without pressure or judgment

If he’s not ready to talk, help him find another trusted adult

The more boys feel seen and understood, the safer and stronger they become, both online and offline.

If you need support we are here to help you and your family. Reach out today.
