Too Much Sugar May Be Worse for Your Heart Than High Cholesterol, Study Finds

A large-scale 15-year study published in JAMA Internal Medicine has revealed that consuming high amounts of added sugar dramatically raises the risk of dying from heart disease—even for people who aren’t overweight.

Researchers found that individuals who got 25% or more of their daily calories from added sugar were over twice as likely to die from heart-related conditions compared to those who consumed less than 10%. This heightened risk was consistent regardless of weight, age, s*x, physical activity level, or cholesterol readings.

The primary source of added sugar? Sugar-sweetened beverages—including sodas and fruit drinks—which make up more than one-third of the added sugar in the average American diet. Other major contributors include desserts, candy, and sweetened cereals.

Scientists believe excess sugar may elevate blood pressure and cause the liver to release harmful fats into the bloodstream—both key contributors to cardiovascular disease.

The American Heart Association recommends limiting added sugar to 6 teaspoons (100 calories) per day for women and 9 teaspoons (150 calories) for men. But just one can of soda can hit—or exceed—those limits.

Experts suggest making small, sustainable swaps: opt for fruit-infused sparkling water instead of soda, and reach for naturally sweet options like whole fruit to reduce your risk of heart disease.

Laura told me a month or so ago to come to her dinner event to conclude her first ever retreat.

Then, a few weeks later, she asked if I was coming. I adamantly said yes as I was under the impression attendance was mandatory. I was honored she wanted me there. I was excited to be part of her energy and event.

You see, Laura is lots of fun in a very intentional, connected and grounded way. I always walk away feeling like my soul is renewed. So yes was the only answer!

Sometimes we agree to things without knowing the impact that will follow and are pleasantly surprised by the ripple effect that lands.

It was a 3 day event so I can only imagine what those that were for more than a few hours felt. I was met with warm, open, connected soulo-entrepreneurs. All were open to learning about me and seeing how their impact could help. How much better would the world be if we all moved this way daily?

I connected with some old friends and made some new ones. My heart was open and alive with possibilities.

It took a few days to integrate all these feelings. The warmth, the newness and the expanded energy within that now has to fit back into the world left. We are changed in ways that is not quite comfortable yet.

Not to mention Saturn retrograding this week, reminding us, we can’t wear anymore masks! Woah! 🤯

I wish you more feelings of expansion. Get out of your comfort zone, connect in ways that feel uncomfortable. It could just light your world on fire in the best way possible! ❤️

We woke up to a snow storm today and many are over it, as the calendar marked the Spring Equinox just last week.

I get sentimental about snow storms.

The nostalgia from grade school where everything stopped and the fun began.

We don’t get to do that much as adults~ responsibilities and jobs don’t pause with the weather. But on a Saturday, I get more flexibility.

I begrudgingly took the dogs out for their trail romp and watched them light up, racing around in the woods as their playground. I couldn’t help but laugh watching their joy and enjoy the moment, too. I melted into the quiet around me and felt connected to the earth.

The snow is still falling now, almost evening time, and looks like a snow globe as it floats at the perfect pace out the window.

I am leaning into mother nature’s message. We have the eclipse, two retrogrades and a snow storm. It seems only fitting that we slow down and introspect.

What is the message? What is meant to come up and be explored, healed, released? I am learning the eclipse is in charge whether we want it or not. So I’m letting nature guide me and releasing what no longer serves. Sitting in stillness, grounding with my puppies and connecting with the energy of the cards. 🔮

What is coming up for you? What needs to be transmuted? Enjoy your day however best serves you. 💫

This past week in Maine has brought us a triple scoop of winter storms.

❄️ One of my favorite things about Maine is the ability to appreciate the winter, to get out in nature, enjoy a winter sport, hike with my pups.

This week has delivered perfect powder or perfect “snowman snow”. Getting out after a storm is a special gift.

I enjoy the serenity of being among the trees and soft snow below my feet, barely touched by anyone else yet. Possibly passing by other brave souls, connected in our affection for the beauty around us.

I appreciate it all as the sun filters in and the dogs run through the mounds, exuding pure happiness in their bodies.

There’s very little movement outside of the puppies running. Other animals and plants are also enjoying the stillness, hiding or keeping warm, deep below the earth.

I can hear myself think. I am grounded and calm as I take in what’s around me, discharge what I don’t need.

So often we move so quickly from responsibility to responsibility, buzzing along with our phones, forgetting to breathe and forgetting to be in the moment. We stress our bodies out and create illness within.

If you can do one thing to slow it all down, let your body align with nature and feel the clarity take hold within .

Always love seeing these two faces and especially excited when it’s a surprise visit to Portland!

Life ebbs and flows and while she was a teeny tiny cousin when I was a kid, now she’s full grown with a babe of her own! It’s a special kind of connection to be friends with the ones we also call family.
Glad you two got to get away and have some adult time. My absolute pleasure that I could see you both! Cheers!

Enjoying the perfect summer evening, the Kennebec river in Bath and first time at !!

Working the 3rd shift is something I’ve done sporadically and never quite get used to it.
Getting a little treat beforehand and some very good support from coworkers can make everything doable!

This year feels especially important. Each year, birthdays come, if we’re so blessed to experience them.
Most years, I reflect on the last year and celebrate wheee I am now, soak up the sun and lean into all the celebration! I also look towards the next year and see where I want to take myself.

Often, the juice will dissipate by fall and motivation is replaced with life’s tasks and duties. Dreams and desires fade as the seasons change.

This year, it feels there’s new life within me. It’s bursting and ready to shine. I feel unstoppable with a clear destination.

I’m so grateful for the love I have in my life through dear friends and family. I’m so much more appreciative of how I’m held up and witnessed. In years past, I had too many unhealed barriers that I couldn’t always feel the light that was guiding me. I’m especially thankful for the ones who stayed with me through these difficult days. The ones that could witness me when I couldn’t see myself.

I won’t share all the ways I expect this year to transpire, you’ll have to wait and see 😉

But I’ll share that it involves me caring for me in a much deeper and more intimate way. Hearing the cravings, whispers and desire of my body and honoring her needs.

Moving and nurturing myself first and foremost so that I can be what I and the world need from me.

The world needs both leaders and followers, the coach and the player, and we can play those roles at different times. We also have to know when it’s our time to step up and take our turn. I’m so excited to take my turn.

Thank you for your witnessing. Happy beautiful birthday to me. ❤️🦀🎉🎆

I love going out to restaurants by myself, in the right setting. I love a crisp glass a wine and eating what ever I choose.

It might be years of working behind the bar and appreciating quality cheffing. Or the fact that I knew so many people in the industry it felt like a built in social network anytime I went out. Either way, it feels empowering to me.

As I have shifted priorities in the last few years, it’s something I have done much less. But today, I needed a day to myself, to support me. The sun, oysters and solitude was just what I needed to close the day and start my vacation.

If you’re nearby, I hope you got to experience this absolutely beautiful day as well. By all accounts it’s the perfect summer day.

I love the gift I’ve given to infuse myself in others lives and facilitate change. I also recognize the gift comes with a need for balance and to care for my own self. Today is that gift to me and I’m grateful. ❤️

🌺 Flower crown for full moon in Cancer. ♋️
It’s officially my birthday season!

I was blessed to be part of this full moon circle last Friday night— where the crowns were made. It was as out of my comfort zone to accept the invite of people I had never met but I went. Turned out my intuition guided me brilliantly as I reconnected with some acquaintances and met some wonderfully warm and openhearted women.

As we celebrated the solstice, we tapped into sun and the light that will stay with us for the season. The sun is my medicine. I embody the warmth, its strength and I feel tapped into my power as a nurturer.

We also celebrated the sun moving into cancer. Sometimes it’s easy as a crab (cancer’s symbol) to stay within the shell and keep the boundary.
However, there’s a lesson from the crab, move your way at your own pace.

It’s the time, especially in New England, that we want to be out enjoying the beautiful weather and seeing all the old friends and do it in a way that feels good as the crab would do.

The power we have to feel things can be extremely deep and sometimes even feel others emotions that they are unaware of.
With that power comes the need to protect and support ourselves. Let this be medicine for you, too.
Thank you for all the blessings and wisdom from the circle. 🙏🏽❤️🌝
