NEWS CENTER Maine reported on a study at the MaineHealth Institute for Research investigating which animal species are helping it spread.

Scientists are trying to determine if shrews and voles are helping spread the potentially deadly tickborne illness.

It’s Pride month and this year’s theme, “For Your Health, Be Yourself,” highlights MaineHealth’s commitment to understanding and addressing health disparities in the LGBTQ+ community and encourages LGBTQ+ care team members and the community to bring their authentic selves to every interaction!

Pride Month is celebrated annually in June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Riots, an uprising that occurred in response to a police raid on a gay club in New York City. Today, the month is a time to celebrate the diverse array of sexual and gender identities that make up the LGBTQ+ community, and also to celebrate the joy that can be found in living authentically.

Care Team Member Spotlight!

Seija, Home Care Registered Nurse - MaineHealth Care at Home

“I have been with MHCAH for over 10 years now and absolutely love being a home health RN,” said Seija. “As a Registered Nurse with a background at the hospital, home health is different because you get to focus on one patient at a time. Yes, you see multiple patients throughout the day but while you are in their homes they have your undivided attention, care, and advocacy. Being able to care for patients in their home is very special because it is where they feel most comfortable and are themselves. The rapport and relationships you make with patients and their families are unmatched from any other field of nursing I have worked in. Patients and their families depend on seeing their home health RN weekly or more often depending on the situation, as we are a great advocate for patients and always communicate closely with their doctors.”

Seija added, “Another aspect of home health I adore is the flexibility of being able to make my own schedule and shift patients around if needed. Home health has allowed me to be able to be at all of my daughter’s sports games, practices, and school events without missing days at work. This is the most important aspect of this job and I cherish the time I have with her while still being able to have a successful career.”

“Being autonomous is another wonderful part of this job. We are the eyes for doctors when patients have a difficult time getting to the office for visits. Being depended on for assessments, skills, and communication with MD offices is very important and I love being able to advocate for patients, especially when they are too frail to get out of the house to be seen by their doctor. Home health is an essential part of health care, and I am beyond grateful I found my niche 10 years ago when I joined Mainehealth Care at Home.”

Seija – thank you so much for sharing your Home Health career journey with us. We are so happy that you have found your passion, and we are incredibly proud of the excellent care that you provide to your patients.
