Struggling with transitions or getting your little one to complete a tricky task? Try using the magic of "First / Then" statements! πβ¨
In ABA, we call this the Premack Principle, but for parents, itβs simply a game-changer for avoiding power struggles.
How it works: You state the expectation (unpreferred task) followed immediately by the positive outcome (preferred item or activity).
Instead of negotiating, "If you don't clean your room, you can't have your iPad," flip it to a clear, positive expectation:
π£οΈ "First clean up the blocks, Then iPad."
π£οΈ "First put on your shoes, Then we go to the park."
Why it works: It keeps your language simple, removes the emotional battle, and helps your child understand exactly what needs to happen to get to the fun stuff. Keep it short, sweet, and stick to the deal!
Have you tried using First/Then language at home? Let us know how it worked in the comments! π
