Happy 4th Oak Creek family! We’re wishing each and everyone a fun-filled but safe holiday. Although it is a time to celebrate the freedom we have as Americans, it is also a time to reflect on the past. Take a moment to realize what you really have and maybe even thank a veteran for their service to our country.

Although every individual is unique, veterans as a group tend to have special end-of-life needs. Many have experienced illness, isolation or trauma as a result of their service. Some never received recognition after returning home. Oak Creek Hospice volunteers bring comfort to veterans through compassionate listening and a respectful acknowledgement of their service. We care for our veterans. 🇺🇸

For many veterans or friends and family of veterans, including those receiving hospice care, Memorial Day represents a more serious time: an opportunity to honor those who have lost their lives defending our country. This day is to honor the men and women who died while serving in the military. These brave men and women gave the ultimate sacrifice and knowingly put themselves in harm’s way to further protect our country and the lives of others serving. Whether they died while serving or died after service, all are remembered equally.

Pain is unique to each individual. There is no one dose, one kind, one method that fits all. End of life pain management requires time and experimentation to reach a comfort level. Closeness to death itself also affects how medications will be responded to. The closer to death the less circulation there is to distribute the medication throughout the body.

In those days to weeks before death the person is not eating or drinking or they are taking so little fluids we believe they can't possibly be comfortable. This is the time the body is shutting down, letting go of its hold on this life, dying. No food, no water in the last days of life is perfectly normal. That is how we die. It is not uncomfortable or painful to not eat or drink at this stage. It is actually uncomfortable and disruptive for the dying person if we force food and water in the days to weeks before death.
This is a short explanation about a complicated subiect.

Watching someone we care about in the dying process is frightening, stressful and generally misunderstood.

Knowledge reduces fear but it is generally after the fact that we begin processing and asking questions.

This Christmas season we remember the patients and families who will be in the care of the wonderful staff at Oak Creek Hospice.

Christmas is a very special time of year, when we gather with those we love, to celebrate the festive season together and to take time to pause, think back and remember the many happy Christmases we shared with our loved ones. This is also a difficult time of year for many and we remember them in our thoughts during this time.

It can be a difficult time of the year for patients and families struggles to come to terms with illness and death; it is a time of mixed emotions for families. Our staff will spend their time looking after physical, spiritual and psychological needs of patients. They will provide care and fit in with any plans that the family have in place for patients over the festive period.

Outstanding care is about getting both the big and the little things rights – hospice staff always go the extra mile to ensure every patient gets exactly what they need.

For many, Christmas is a season of joy and excitement but it’s also a time for people to remember, reflect and look to the future.  This Christmas, we remember the patients, families, staff and volunteers at Oak Creek Hospice and keep each of them in our thoughts.

May you be blessed with peace and comfort this Christmas season! 🎄✝️♥️

Traditionally, the holidays are a time of joy, laughter, sparkle, glitter and celebrations shared with family and friends. But for individuals who are grieving the loss of a loved one, the holidays can be difficult, bringing about feelings of anxiety, sadness and emptiness. As the holidays approach, it may be helpful to think about how to take care of yourself during this difficult time, or to be aware of the effect the holidays may have on your grieving family or friends. It is important to remember that the anticipation of any holiday can be much worse than the actual event. Allow feelings of joy and try not to feel guilty if you find yourself enjoying the holidays. Having a good time does not mean you have forgotten your loved one. You cannot change the past, but you can take care of the present to help you heal in the future.

WHAT ARE YOU GRATEFUL FOR?

We seem to be re-awakening as a culture to the incredible power of gratitude. Coming to realize that choosing an attitude of gratitude can re-orient our perspective and awaken us to the happiness and fulfillment we can experience. Bringing conscious awareness to what we are grateful for moves us from a position of scarcity to abundance; from sadness to joy, from helpless to helper. In this week of Thanksgiving, may we experience and embrace all that inspires within us a grateful heart. One of the things for which we are grateful for is hospice care. This unique and vital calling to provide compassionate care to those facing their final days. We hold in loving thoughts all those who are providing and receiving hospice care this Thanksgiving week. Have a great week, everyone!
