"There are two primary sources of stress for me right now, and together they have created a kind of sustained pressure that is uncomfortable to live through. Neither is fully resolved. Both are likely to persist, at least for a while. And if I am being honest about it, this has been deeply uncomfortable. There is no part of me that prefers this state. Whatever the source of the stress – and we all have it in spades at times – the feeling in our bodies is often similar."

Summer is a good reminder that feeling better doesn’t always start with something complicated. Sometimes it’s just getting outside, getting some sun, and giving your body a chance to reset.

Spending time outdoors can help with mood, energy, sleep, and even how your body functions overall. It’s all connected. That’s why at Sequoia MD, care isn’t just about treating symptoms, it’s about supporting your mental and physical health together so you can feel better day to day.

So many people feel alone with what happens between our ears. We all have these thoughts, feelings, and emotions, and we struggle with how to share and communicate them with the people we love and care about. We spend 12 years in compulsory education learning how to conjugate verbs and find the area of a circle, but most of us are poorly trained to share our inner world with another person - even when we want to, trust the other person, and are trying as hard as possible to feel less alone.

At Sequoia MD, we provide gender affirming care in a space that’s designed to feel safe, respectful, and supportive. Our focus is on care that fits who you are and helps you feel more comfortable in your own health and body.

Many transgender individuals face added stress in daily life, including higher rates of anxiety, depression, and substance use, and having a provider who understands can make things feel a little bit easier.

We believe every individual deserves readily available healthcare and services that empower them to live a meaningful life.

Self-care doesn’t have to be big or complicated. Sometimes it’s the small things that make your day feel a little easier.

A short walk, a glass of water, stepping outside for fresh air, or taking a few quiet minutes for yourself can go a long way in supporting both your mental and physical health.

It’s not about doing everything. It’s about finding a few simple things that help you feel better, one day at a time.

What are you doing this summer to take care of yourself?

Action eats anxiety, as the saying goes, but only if the action feels directed at the cause of the anxiety. One of the biggest problems I identified had actually been staring me in the face for years; I was just too wrapped up in my own ego and desires to see it clearly. That was a bit of a revelation, and a reminder that all of us have our biases, our pain points, our things we fear and steer around.

Pause for a moment, and think about the things the people we love the most say to us, and what we say to them. “Why are you leaving already” might actually mean, “I miss you, and want to spend more time with you.” Or, “Are you really going to eat that” might better be said as “I love you and am worried about your health.”

This difficulty with translation – both our feelings into words that express how we actually feel, and hearing the sentiment under what other people actually mean – is a huge source of conflict for almost all of us.

Solitude can feel like relief, not because people are absent, but because demand is suspended. The nervous system is no longer required to track, respond, anticipate, or adjust to others. In that suspension, there is often a sense of ease - not because being alone is inherently better, but because obligation has been lifted.

That raises a more precise question: when solitude feels good, what is it actually relieving us from?

When we think about habits, we usually think about things like exercise, diet, or when we wake up in the morning. We do not often think about character-focused behaviors, or relationship behaviors, as habits. Yet habits in these domains are probably more important for both our health and our happiness than how often we exercise, because these habits of character are foundation to most other habits, such as or what time we wake up in the morning.

Honesty, in particular, is a foundational habit - both the honesty with which we relate to others, particularly the honesty with which we relate to ourselves. We usually think about honesty in a moral sense, but it may be more useful to think about it in a behavioral sense, like a habit similar to brushing our teeth or flossing.
