Halloween Safety Tips

Help protect trick-or-treaters by following these driving safety tips on Halloween or when your community hosts Halloween activities this weekend. Be especially careful between 4 and 8 p.m., when the most severe vehicle/young pedestrian collisions happen.

- Drive slowly, and don't pass stopped vehicles. The driver might be dropping off children.
- Park your mobile phone. Avoid distractions by waiting until you've stopped calling, texting, or surfing.
- Watch for children darting into the street. Kids can cross the street anywhere, and most young pedestrian deaths happen at spots other than intersections.
- Yield to young pedestrians. Children might not stop because they don't see your vehicle approaching or don't know how to cross the street safely.
- Communicate with other drivers. Always use your turn signals. And if you have to pull over to drop off or pick up your kids, turn on your hazard lights.

Athletes, Injuries, and Physical Therapy

Strains, sprains, pulled muscles, and even fractures are some possible injuries for our local high school and recreational athletes.

Overuse injuries are common, and while they may initially not appear severe, they can quickly transition into a chronic condition if left untreated. A sore joint from golfing, tennis, swimming, or pitching can result in pain, neurological damage, and dysfunction that may remove an athlete from playing for an entire season.

Sports injuries run the gamut, from the pulled groin, hamstring muscles, and elbow and rotator cuff problems to fractures and dislocations. Injuries are often exacerbated by the athlete’s decision to “power through the pain.” Physical therapy techniques effectively treat and prevent injuries and provide rehabilitation following an injury or surgery. The need for therapy is especially crucial for sports-related injuries.
