Green: Symbolizes life, renewal, and the enduring strength of nature during the darkest days of winter. Evergreens stay green throughout the year, a powerful symbol of life continuing even in the cold.
Red: Represents the vitality of the sun and the life-force of nature, embodied by the red berries on the holly plant.
Symbolic Cycle: The pairing of red and green visually represents the cyclical battle between the dying Holly King and the returning Oak King, a story that foretells the eventual return of spring.
Protective Qualities: The Celts also believed that holly plants were sacred and had protective properties, using them to ward off evil spirits during winter.
