January marked my 2nd year as a clinical professor! While I’ve had to take a break from taking on clinical rotations due to my own hectic school schedule, work and business 😵💫, I’m extremely honored to serve nursing students in the capacity of an educator.
Funny thing is, I initially turned down the opportunity to teach after being offered a position. Imposter syndrome, self doubt and anxiety had me feeling as though I wasn’t equipped for the role.
But then I thought to myself, girl stop ✋🏾 , you teach on a daily basis. Nurses are educators. We teach our patients and communities. Needless to say, I ended up reaching out to accept the position a few months after turning it down and I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions ☺️
I had to take myself out of the equation and reflect more the benefit of my students. Many students entering the inpatient mental health setting are nervous and unsure of what to expect. And sadly, mental health rotations and didactics are often one of the shortest in nursing school leaving us ill prepared in caring for such a vulnerable patient population.
As a clinical professor, my goals are to optimize their learning about mental illness. There is no health without mental health. Our patients need nurses that will advocate on their behalf and exude empathy, kindness, respect and provide compassionate care.
Gratitude to all of my students whom I’ve been able to lend support and mentorship to. I’ve equally learned from and appreciate you all so much! I hope to return soon 🤎
