Informed Consent Agreement
Please review the material below carefully before giving your consent. You are being asked to participate in a research study. The purpose of this study is to examine difficult experiences in romantic relationships (e.g., gaslighting, communication difficulties, and isolation, among others) and how individuals of all genders and sexual identities react to those difficulties. This research is being conducted by Kary Newman, a doctoral student at the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) at Alliant International University, Sacramento, CA. The research study is being done under the supervision of Dr. Emil Rodolfa.
Participants and Procedures
We are asking anyone who is 18 years of age or older and living in the United States (US) who has been in a romantic relationship in the last five years to participate in this research study. If you agree to be in this study, you will be asked to complete an online questionnaire. The survey questionnaire will ask you questions about your demographics, difficult relationship experiences, psychological health and physical health.
Voluntary Nature of the Study
Your participation in this study is entirely voluntary and you may refuse to complete the study at any point during the online questionnaire or refuse to answer any questions with which you are uncomfortable. You will not be penalized for withdrawing.
Benefits
There are no direct benefits to you for participating in this study. However, your participation will add to scientific information and may contribute to a reduction of stigma regarding difficult experiences in romantic relationships.
Risks
The possible risks in this study are limited and are no greater than those that may occur during daily living. Although there are no foreseeable risks, if you experience any distress as a result of this research, please seek help or you may call the SAMHSAβs National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357 or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.
Confidentiality
All information collected will be anonymous and will be kept private. Your name will never be connected to your results or to your responses to the questionnaires. Information that would make it possible to identify you or any other participant will never be included in any sort of report. The results of this study may be published in scientific journals however you will never be recognized as one of the participants.
