Repetition, repetition, repetition during our favorite activity this season!

Repetition is the theme of the month, following up on our “less is more” approach for our early language learners. First, we pick some early vocabulary words-- words they can use on the walk and in other activities. Then, we name them, find them, and add them to phrases.

It should feel like you’re playing hide and seek or Where’s Waldo: “Tree!” ... “I see a tree!” ... “Oo, look! A tree!” ... “Another tree!” ... “Do you see a tree?” .... When you get to another tree: “What do you see?”

Let me know how this goes on your next walk! 💛

Some of our core values are to support, educate, and empower parents throughout the intervention process.

When your child faces a difficulty, it can feel overwhelming. You could be asking yourself: “Are they “behind?” Can I do “more?” Where do I learn this? Who do I talk to? Does this have long-term effects? I wish I knew how to support them.”

Let’s change that to: “This is a challenge that we can handle. If I have questions, I know a trusted speech therapist I can ask. My knowledge and experiences with my child and family will be listened to and heard. My concerns will be validated and addressed. I don’t need to do “more,” I will tweak what I’m already doing. I get training and hands-on practice every session so I know how to help my child. I feel empowered to help them progress.”

If you have any questions about your child’s development, we offer free consultations to answer questions and make a plan, if necessary 💛 https://stringofwordsspeech.com

Sometimes, less IS more. "Less" words equals "more" repetition in this case! Reading a book to a baby or toddler doesn’t have to look like... “reading a book.” It can be a prop to your active, interactive play. Here are some examples of book play and repetition:

"Hi!" / waving:
After flipping each page, wave and say "hi!" to the caterpillar when you find him.

“Caterpillar!”: Search for the caterpillar on each page. When you or your baby/toddler finds it, touch it and holler “Caterpillar!!”

“Om nom nom”: Babies will imitate and say sound effects before they will use words! Model this sound while your pretend finger caterpillar or you pretend to eat the food in the book.

“More”: Say and/or sign “more” before turning the page. You can also say “more food!” as caterpillar, you, or baby pretends to eat more food.

“Eat”: Say and/or sign “eat” before caterpillar, you, or baby pretends to eat more food.

“Hungry”: Try pretending to eat or have the caterpillar eat the food on the page while using these phrases: “Is caterpillar hungry or full? He’s Hungry!” “Still hungry…” “I’m hungry! Om nom nom…” “Are you hungry?”

New ways to play with books! Sometimes your baby or toddler is energetic or you've read the same book 5 times today and you just want to change it up!

Try these new ways to combine books and play next time you read together! (Full info on the blog post https://stringofwordsspeech.com/new-ways-to-play-with-books/).

Label pictures
On each page, introduce vocabulary by excitedly pointing to things you see: “Look! A star! Ooo, a bear! Grrr.”

Find pictures
Once you have introduced the vocabulary in a book, take turns with the child to find pictures you name:
“Hmm, where’s the star… Star!” as you touch it.

Pretend play
Some books are built to be interactive (“Stir Crack Whisk Bake”), but any book can work! If a page has an animal, pet or feed it.

Act out
With books like “We’re Going on an Egg Hunt,” toddlers can pretend to run from the wolf and slam the door to keep him away from their chocolate eggs!
