In honor of Omphalocele Awareness Day today, we celebrate Everly Jacobsen, who was diagnosed with an abnormally large omphalocele, a birth defect that affects one in 5,000 children.

"Everly is truly a miracle! Since her repair in October 2024, she has been absolutely thriving. She never let her condition get in her way, but now that she has recovered, she is unstoppable. She is currently enjoying dance, taking swimming lessons, doing well in school, and has a wonderful group of friends. She also became a big sister this year," said Everly's mom Brianne. "We are so grateful to the doctors and nurses at UC Davis for being such an important part of her journey." ❤️

Scientists from UC Davis Center for Surgical Bioengineering, the UC Davis MIND Institute and UC Berkeley’s Murthy Lab are developing an in-utero gene editing technology to fix mutations causing severe neurologic conditions.

Led by UC Davis Bioengineer Aijun Wang, the team will design and test a therapy targeting the UBE3A gene. Overexpression of this gene contributes to Dup15q syndrome, and its absence leads to Angelman syndrome. Both conditions are profound neurodevelopmental conditions that could co-occur with autism.

Dup15q syndrome affects about 1 in 5,000 individuals. It is 10 times more common in people with autism and intellectual disability. More than half of patients with Dup15q experience epilepsy.

“There is no readily available cure for Dup15q syndrome,” says Wang, professor of surgery and biomedical engineering. “Caring for chronically ill children with this condition places a significant emotional and financial burden on their families. The goal of the gene editing therapy we are developing is to one day treat Dup15q in utero so that children are born without the condition.”
