We’ve all been there. Just about to start something important on our laptop, phone, or tablet....then comes the notification: “Software Update Needed.”

Just like your essential tech needs regular updates to function optimally, so does your internal operating system - your magnificent brain and limitless subconscious mind.

Every day, you're running hundreds of subconscious "programs" behind the scenes. Some are empowering, such as routines that nourish your health, beliefs that align with your goals, and uplifting thought patterns that lead to clarity and action.

Back in my mid-20s, I experienced a breakout of severe cystic acne - deep and inflamed - all over my chin and jawline. Lasting nearly 3 painful years, I was embarrassed by my appearance.

I dreaded mirrors, spent an excessive amount of money on products, and cried often out of frustration.

Despite all my efforts - cleansers, scrubs, toners, concealers -nothing worked. What I didn’t realize then was that I was only treating the surface, not addressing the underlying "root" cause of why my skin (and body) was so inflamed.

Years before I would pursue becoming a Naturopathic Doctor, I was unknowingly in the midst of a “perfect storm” of internal stressors. This inconvenient and humiliating problem would become a catalyst for changing my health, lifestyle practices and my life in countless ways.

At the time, I was eating/addicted to pro-inflammatory foods - breads, dairy, sugars - that worsened my gut health and led to IBS for many years.

Additionally, I was under enormous emotional stress that led to insomnia, anxiety, depression, and overall nervous system dysregulation. A recurring loop that I couldn't find a way out of.

To make matters worse, my hormones were completely out of sync. I wasn’t ovulating, which meant low progesterone and irregular cycles, skipping periods.

This, combined with a substantial rise in testosterone and DHEA (related to insulin resistance), created the "perfect storm" environment for hormonal cystic acne.

These three stressors - Gut Inflammation, Emotional/Mental Stress & Hormonal Imbalance intersected and showed up on my skin.

This experience, while difficult to face in every way, became the impetus for my journey into Naturopathic Medicine - whole body, mind, spirit approach to healing.

Now with 20 years of experience as a doctor and a much deeper understanding of women's health and the Gut-Brain-Hormone Axis, I have helped thousands of women restore their health and hormone balance.

The Gut-Brain-Hormone Axis is a powerful triad that governs a woman’s mood, skin, cycle, metabolism, and resilience. When in balance, women THRIVE.

Nervous System Regulation is a growing, evolving and essential topic. Far from being a popular trend, it’s a powerful cultural shift rooted in a deeper awakening for everyone.

Over-hustling, burnout, and nervous system dysregulation are at an all-time high. People are realizing you can’t keep “pushing through” exhaustion.

Metabolic Health in Perimenopause & Menopause

Do perimenopause and menopause cause a dip in metabolism and overall health? Possibly. But it doesn’t have to be drastic if you have the right information, tools, and mindset to combat it.

Perimenopause involves gradual hormone changes over several years—typically affecting women 35 to 55—leading to physical, emotional, and psychological shifts.

Menopause is when menstruation has stopped for 12+ months—it's gone, baby, gone.

A common struggle during this transition is metabolic decline, linked to dropping levels of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.

Metabolism vs. Metabolic Health

Metabolism: The biochemical processes converting food into energy (ATP), supporting cell repair, tissue function, and hormonal balance.

Metabolic Health: The efficiency of your body's ability to process, generate, and utilize energy from food or reserves.
Why Does Metabolism Slow Down?

🔹Estrogen Decline → Increased Abdominal Fat
🔹Estrogen regulates fat distribution & insulin sensitivity.
🔹As levels drop, more fat stores in the abdomen, increasing insulin resistance, inflammation, and cardiovascular risk.

As we approach the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, the shortest day and the longest night of the year, we are immersed in the richness of spiritual symbolism and significance. An intentional integration of light and darkness, this sacred time is often perceived as a time for deeper self-awareness, self-reflection, and self-renewal. This is a fertile time for creativity, growth and transformation.

Here's a bit more into this meaningful turning point:

The Return of Light

This brief window of shadows marks a point when the days gradually illuminate our lives. From a place of deep, inner knowing, we are in a wiser position for releasing the old that contracts us and welcoming in the new that expands us. Triumph over our own self-limitations.

From Stillness to Motion

I recently wrote an article on Simplify to Amplify on the power of slowing down and becoming more mindful, conscious and present so we can become more purpose-driven, efficient and productive later. Meditation, journaling, breathwork, prayer, time in nature, intentional alone time and other spiritual practices are excellent sources of inspiration.

Mirroring the Cycles of Nature & Life

Everything in nature is based on seasons, cycles and patterns. Your life is the same. Remembering this sequence and flow of nature or "seasonal ebb and flow" as it relates to your own life - can help deepen your connection to the natural world that surrounds you, enhance mindfulness and presence, and promote a sense of ease, harmony, and grace in your life. The winter solstice - physically, metaphorically, and spiritually - is a time to trust in the unknown and have faith in what's to come. Amid temporary darkness, plant your seeds of hope, ideas, visions, desires, and intention and surrender to the conviction that it's on its way to you at the right time and in a way that's right for you.

These Holidays, there's a massive push to do more, buy more, have more, accomplish more & be more.

For many, it's often a time for more accumulation, acceleration & overwhelm. Interesting...since we are approaching the Winter Solstice, the shortest daylight hours and a natural time to "withdraw," slow down & go deeper within.

I love the phrase "Simplify...So you can Amplify." In other words, sometimes we need to slow down and release the unnecessary "baggage" that's weighing us down - to rediscover our bearings, regain awareness, reestablish clarity, redirect ourselves, and refocus to pick up the pace later.

I'll be honest...I struggle with this one. Yet when I am reminded of it - or rather, when life reminds me for me, it makes sense. My life becomes easier **because** I've slowed down, simplified, and released things I no longer need.

"Simply to Amplify" might seem counterintuitive. However, it's a powerful concept emphasizing the importance of pausing, reflecting, and making life less complicated and cumbersome for a better, richer quality of life.

This simple reminder applies to many areas of your life - personal growth, your health and wellness, work and business, relationships, hobbies, talents and more.

Here's an easy breakdown:

Quality Over Quantity

Simplify, slow down, and use your precious time to do things more thoughtfully & intentionally. More mindful, less hurried & less chance for mistakes and mishaps. Not to mention a better opportunity for being more productive, successful & happier.

Clarity Breeds Mastery

When you slow down, you often get crystal clear on what you want in your life; your goals are more visible and possible; and situations, circumstances, problems & challenges seem more solvable. Throughout the 17 years of helping women during the perimenopause and menopause years, I've literally and intuitively observed many things.

Women during this transitional, mid-life period of their lives (ages ~35 to 55+) are often enduring many changes simultaneously.

I love to use the term "mid-life reevaluation. What needs to change in your life? What do you need to release? What do you need to welcome? Who do you need to become to create the life you most desire? This is an imperfectly perfect time to reassess your priorities, health, relationships, dreams and goals.

Health & Wellness Upgrade

If you are female, Perimenopause and Menopause are inevitable. At some point, the reproductive, fertile party must come to an end. With that, women often experience symptoms such as weight and body fat changes, temperature fluctuations, mood swings, insomnia, sugar cravings, skin and hair dryness, body aches and more.

Use this potentially frustrating, chaotic time to upgrade your physical health. Most women aged 45-50 can't afford to eat the same types or quantities of food as when they were aged 25-30. Your nutritional intake is even more important now. Muscle strengthening exercises during this time are no longer optional. Your relationships - all of them - evolve as well to match your present state of being. Your job, career, or business is going through its own evolutionary cycle. What used to light you up may have burned out and it may be time to reconsider something new and more aligned for you.

Hello and Welcome!

I’m Dr. Kristi Tompkins and I’m a professionally licensed Naturopathic Medical Doctor practicing a Functional Medicine approach to treating patients. I chose Naturopathic Medicine as my profession because it resonates with how I view my own health with its emphasis on prevention and natural treatments to heal and restore the whole body. Most significantly, it is my passion and calling to share with other people what I have learned in my own life and experienced in clinical practice to make a positive impact on other’s healing and recovery.

I enjoy delving into the intricacies and the mysteries of the human body and inspiring people to help themselves. Whether it’s the synergy between hormones, the complex gut microbiome, the powerful muscles, the magnificent brain or the life-giving heart, it is this interconnection of our body, mind and spirit that continues to astound and motivate me. If we give the body what it needs, remove the obstacles that are standing in the way to greater health, the body can often inherently heal itself.

Throughout my lifetime, I’ve struggled with health conditions with many of those successfully treated with functional medicine. From menstrual irregularities, PMS, cystic acne, migraine headaches, IBS and food sensitivities, sinusitis and colds, insomnia, and a bout of PTSD with subsequent depression and anxiety, I have been able to help myself over and over again with this medicine in addition to help from my professional colleagues. I absolutely believe in this approach to healing and I believe that it can help you as well.
