Hi everyone! It’s been a minute since I’ve introduced myself.

I’m Dr. Maddie a pelvic floor physical therapist and recently started doing some volunteer birth doula support.

I truly enjoy empowering women to have a positive birth experience and feel supported throughout pregnancy, delivery and postpartum recovery.

Now that I’ve been present in a few delivery rooms, it has really opened my eyes up to the importance of advocating for patients. There can be so much pressure in a delivery suite and if it’s your first time, sometimes it’s easier just to give in to what you’re being asked. I will preface that with as long as you and baby are doing ok! Because trust me, if something is going wrong, I am the last person you want in that room.

It is so important to me to reach as many birthing people as possible! I want them to know the difference between common and normal. I want them to know the importance of rehabbing after having a baby and how long that truly takes. And I want them to go into their delivery without fear and feel confident with the decisions they are making for themselves and baby.

If you know someone who is thinking about getting pregnant, already pregnant, or early postpartum, please share with them ❤️

Happy Birthday to my love

You continue to amaze me with your unwavering support, kindness, and laughter. This past year has brought its share of challenges, but through it all, your love and support have helped me to stay grounded. Your ability to find joy in the little moments with all the craziness has made all the difference.

I’m endlessly grateful for the way you lift me up and remind me of the beauty in our lives. You inspire me to see the silver linings and embrace each day with a heart full of hope.

Here’s to you! May this year be filled with all the happiness and love you deserve.

I love you ❤️

Visitor policy: How many people can you have in your room? Does that number include a doula? If you have other kiddos, are they able to visit?

Labor positions: Are you able to move around and change positions? Can you leave the bed? Can you leave your room and walk the unit? Do they have wireless monitoring?

Pain management strategies: We all know about the epidural. But what other options do they have such as a spinal, nitrous oxide, fentanyl? Do they have TENS units, peanuts, birthing balls, massagers, CUBs?

Delivery Positions: That’s great you can move around during labor, but do you have to deliver on your back? Can you deliver in any position if you don’t have an epidural? Can you deliver in any position in the bed if you have an epidural? If there is a tub, can you deliver in the tub?

Cesarean Rates: What are there Cesarean Rates? You can even ask about instrumental assisted vaginal delivery and episiotomy rates? Are there certain OBs who tend to encourage a lot of interventions?

Breastfeeding support: Do they have lactation consultants on staff at the hospital? How often do they tend to see patients?

Did I miss any questions that you wish you would have asked in your delivery? COMMENT below.

Layla’s birthday weekend has officially come to a close.

My baby girl is 3 and I got to experience my one and only time of giving birth 3 years ago.

I am truly in awe at this amazing, smart, spunky girl who continues to surprise me every day. I only wish that we could slow time to really savor every moment.

I love you ❤️

Returning to seggs post baby can be intimidating but it doesn’t have to be! You are able to return to vaginal pe*******on once cleared by your OB. The following tips will help when the time feels right to you.

✨FINGER/TOY after having baby your body will be a little different. It’s possible things that used to feel good may feel different. A great place to start is to explore this new body of yours to see what feels good. You can use your finger or a toy. And if that feels to much then just grab a mirror.

✨LUBE all of the l**e! Your hormones are on a wild roller coaster and if you are breastfeeding you may be on the roller coaster for a little while. Your estrogen levels are low which can lead to vaginal dryness making vaginal pe*******on uncomfortable. If you are noticing vaginal dryness I do recommend a hybrid l**e with hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid mimics the effects of estrogen helping your tissues feel more moisturized.

✨PILLOWS it’s all about those angles. Play around with pillows under your hips, knees, stomach. Pillows bring the surface to your body to improve support and promote relaxation. Plus they can change the angle making it more comfortable.

✨ENVIRONMENT this can make a huge difference! I mean would you get it on in a brightly lit room with your kiddos favorite songs playing in the background? Um no (unless that’s your thing) so let’s turn the lights down, light a candle, play music that will help put you in the mood. Maybe the temperature needs to be just right.

✨CURIOSITY when it comes to seggs, vaginal pe*******on is just one form. Maybe you try more external things? Explore other areas of you and your partners body and see what feels good. And if there is something you are interested in trying communicate that with your partner.

✨PARTNER if having a partner during seggs is your norm, communicate all of the above things with them. Seggs is a normal part of day to day life and if you’re nervous maybe your partner can help calm those fears. Good communication is so important during this time.

SEPTEMBER PHOTO DUMP!

I figured it was time for a little photo dump. I’m actually the worst at taking photos (I know that seems really strange but I’m all about living in the moment). So these are a few things we enjoyed this September.

☀️ My second swing on a par 4 😱

☀️ Football season has started, which means lots of Sunday mama and Layla time

☀️ Marley and Ziggy are trying to figure out the pack situation

☀️ We all got Covid

☀️ Chad survived and dare I say thrived a weekend with Layla and the two dogs while I was gone.

☀️ Went to LA to visit one of my besties and her family and take a pelvic floor course.

Are you an over packer or an under packer when it comes to your hospital go bag?

I was definitely an under packer. I had a small carryon suitcase and Chad had a duffle bag. To be fair we do live like 5 minutes from the hospital.

Things that I was glad I brought:
✨Pillows for Chad and myself
✨Spare clothes for leaving the hospital, including slide on sandals because I was so swollen!
✨Playlist. I never used my AirPods, but the speaker was nice
✨Birth preferences because I always like to have an idea of a plan.
✨Outfits for Layla. I wasn’t sure how big she would be so I brought two.
✨Extra bag to bring all the goodies home
✨Towels, because have you seen the hospital towels? They literally cover nothing.

Things I wish I had brought:
✨Shower shoes. But I ended up using my Berks 🙈
✨Eyeshades. Only because there is always a little bit of light coming in at the hospital
✨A sound machine. I think Layla and Chad would have benefitted from it.
✨A stroller fan. I think some cool air would have been very helpful.

What was the best thing you packed? Leave a comment or put it in the notes!

A diastasis recti is a pregnancy adaptation to allow for the uterus to grow and expand. But even though there is a high prevalence towards the end of the third trimester, you can still do things to protect it.
