May 4 - 10 is known as Trans History Week.

Many people believe that the concept of being transgender, third gender, or gender non-conforming is a new invention. Most of us have probably heard an older family member insist that “trans wasn’t a thing” when they were younger. The truth is that genderfluid individuals have been documented worldwide as early as 1200 BCE (that’s 820 years ago, or 30-40 generations of humans).

The only slight truth about newness applies to the term “transgender”. The reality is that there has always been a word for these individuals who exist outside the simple terms of “male” or “female”. The indigenous Americans call them nádleehi and lhamana, in Indonesia, they are still called waria.

It might surprise you to know that legal protection for people experiencing s*xual violence is fairly new. Marital R**e only became completely illegal in 1993. Domestic violence was only truly recognized as a crime in 1994. Even in 2026, victims of human trafficking are often arrested for prostitution and s*x work regardless of the coercion that brought them there.

The fight is still going. With the repeal of Roe v. Wade, the rise in gender-specific healthcare bans, the increasing acceptance of s*xual predators in federal positions of power, and the criminalization of women’s health, it has never been more important for us to continue pushing for legislation that protects us all.

This year marks 30 years of the Day of Silence. Originally held by students at the University of Virginia, it is one of the largest student-led actions in the US, with hundreds of thousands of students participating each year. On this day, students and staff at middle schools, high schools, and universities choose not to speak during classes and between periods to draw attention to how LGBTQ+ students are being silenced through bullying, social exclusion, and discriminatory policies.

We're starting off with the most important part of Sexual Assault Prevention: Consent. How to give it, how to understand it, and what it actually means. No one wants to be the perpetrator or victim of s*xual violence, so having conversations with your partners about boundaries and comfort levels is critical to having safe, enjoyable s*xual encounters.
