Originally held by students at the University of Virginia, it is one of the largest student-led actions in the US, with hundreds of thousands of students participating each year. On this day, students and staff at middle schools, high schools, and universities choose not to speak during classes and between periods to draw attention to how LGBTQ+ students are being silenced through bullying, social exclusion, and discriminatory policies.

This year marks 25 years of Sexual Assault Awareness Month being observed. The fight to stop s*xual violence has been going on for so much longer, but SAAM was the result of multiple movements and organizations coming together. From Take Back The Night in the 1970s and 80s to the Pennsylvania Coalition Against R**e, this awareness period has been built by the millions of people who have faced s*xual assault. During the month of April, we will be addressing the importance of destigmatization, prevention, and understanding when it comes to ending the systemic abuses that allow s*xual violence to be normalized and disregarded in our society.

In these times of turmoil, it can be hard to find reasons to celebrate. It can even be dangerous to be your true self, to feel safe enough to present yourself to the world outside your room. But these are the times when joy and authenticity are the most necessary. Today, March 31st, is Transgender Day of Visibility, so make it loud. Make it colorful, make it beautiful just by being who you are. Never let anyone steal your spark, never let anyone erase you. Celebrate who you are today.
