July Image of the Month: Gyrate Atrophy, provided by Joseph Kraus at California Retina Consultants.

In this fluorescein angiogram of a patient with gyrate atrophy, we see the choroidal circulation in exquisite detail because the overlying retina and choroid have degenerated. Gyrate Atrophy is caused by a rare autosomal recessive mutation that causes a deficiency of ornithine aminotransferase. Loss of this enzyme leads to toxic build up of ornithine in the choroid and retina. There is no cure for gyrate atrophy, though treatments that lower ornithine levels by restricting arginine or supplementing vitamin B6.

Fireworks may light up the sky, but they also send thousands to the ER each year, especially around the 4th of July. Eye injuries, burns, and serious trauma are common, particularly in kids. This Fireworks Safety Week (June 28–July 4), skip backyard fireworks and keep celebrations safe - your child's sight depends on it.

What are the earliest signs that diabetic retinopathy is affecting your retina? In the beginning, you may not notice any symptoms, but tiny blood vessels in the retina can become twisted or leak, leaving small spots of blood. This is called nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy, and if left unchecked, it can progress to more serious forms or lead to diabetic macular edema, which blurs vision and can cause permanent damage. Regular eye exams are essential for catching these changes early and protecting your sight.

June Image of the Month: Asteroid Hyalosis, provided by Inara Pimentel at Vitreoretinal Consultants.

No this isn't a snow globe, but asteroid hyalosis! Asteroid Hyalosis is characterized by calcium-lipid asteroid bodies that are suspended in the collagen fibrils of the vitreous. We aren't entirely sure what causes asteroid hyalosis, but it is almost always a benign process and surprisingly, does not cause visual disturbance. Very rarely is any intervention necessary to treat this process. While it is fun to look at, it can make accurate examination and imaging of the retina more challenging.
