What Is the Why
Why we created Yoga Moves Us, and why do we keep going? Because there is something powerful at the core of Yoga that matters, not just for the individual, but for communities, society, and the fabric of what it means to live well.
This isn’t just about breathing deeply. It’s about connection. It’s about reclaiming power over ourselves. It’s about creating communities that self-regulate, communities that are harder to control, manipulate, or harm, because they grow from within, grounded in awareness, integrity, and compassion.
The Why Today: Why We Continue On
We continue to grow Yoga Moves Us because:
Health: Yoga helps us with physical health, flexibility, strength, breathing, and resilience.
Mental Wellness: Yoga has tools for stress, trauma, anxiety, and depression, helping to calm the mind and bring clarity.
Joy & Flourishing: Because beyond survival, there is joy. Yoga teaches us to notice beauty, to take delight, and to live in peace.
Justice & Safety: Because Yoga in community builds self-regulation. People learn to choose rather than simply react. That can reduce crime, reduce harm, and break cycles of violence.
When communities self-regulate, when people have practices and tools to manage their own stress, behavior, and emotions, they are less vulnerable to manipulation. Less reactive. More able to make ethical choices. This matters for:
Crime: Individuals are less likely to act out of fear, anger, or despair.
Health: Stress, trauma, and chronic illness often come from lack of control and internal chaos. Self-regulation helps reduce those.
Overall wellness: Physical, mental, and emotional well-being improve.
Why the “Why” Matters
Because without knowing why, systems become hollow. Practices become mechanical. Yoga risks being commodified or diluted. But when we hold the why:
We anchor into purpose.
We resist being co-opted by purely external goals like fitness, appearance, or profit.
We ensure Yoga serves transformation for individuals, communities, and society. Share your thoughts about why you participate in our classes, why you support us, why you do yoga, or whatever you want to share about. We want to know…what’s your why.
