A little friendly competition, big smiles, and plenty of brain boosts! 🃏Residents of the Trousdale (an Eskaton-managed community) enjoyed a lively game of blackjack, a fun card game that can improve concentration, sharpen reflexes, boost cognitive function, and keep minds active while connecting with friends. That’s what we call a winning hand! 🎉♠️♥️♣️♦️

At Eskaton, every resident has a story, and Lyla Hanson’s spans the globe. Step into her apartment at Eskaton Land Park and you’ll find yourself surrounded by the colors, textures, and history of dozens of countries. Each shelf and wall is lined with treasures collected over decades of travel, with pieces that hold both cultural meaning and personal memories.

Lyla’s love for travel began in 1980 when she took her very first trip abroad on a tour through Israel. That journey sparked a lifelong passion. Since then, she has embarked on 73 international trips, and has brought home something special from almost every adventure. Her collection now includes items from China, Norway, the Netherlands, Japan, Portugal, Mexico, Russia, Spain, Turkey, and France. China, in particular, holds a special place in her heart. She visited eight times between 1981 and the early 2000s. Her apartment reflects those experiences with cloisonné dishes, porcelain antiques, hand-painted scrolls, and jade sculptures, some marked with official wax seals from the Chinese government signifying their authenticity as antiques.

Most of Lyla’s travels were shared with her husband, and later with her adult children after his passing. For her, travel has always been about more than the destination. Truly, it’s about perspective. “Traveling does give you the understanding that we’re all in this together,” Lyla says. “People are the same. We might have different languages and different cultures. But we’re the same.” Coming from a working-class background, Lyla is grateful that she’s had so many opportunities to travel abroad throughout her lifetime, and she especially takes pride in the fact that her children have also had the chance to experience the world. “Every one of them has been able to go abroad at least once,” she shares. “And that’s a great thing.”

Lyla’s apartment is more than a collection of artifacts. It’s a living museum of memories, connections, and a deep appreciation for the diversity and unity of people around the world. Her story reminds us that adventure is not only about seeing the world but also about carrying its lessons with us wherever we go.

Since launching our Memory Café program nine months ago, we’ve seen participation steadily grow, revealing the increasing need for supportive spaces that offer resources and meaningful social connection for individuals experiencing mild dementia or other cognitive changes, as well as their care partners.

Spectrum News of Southern California recently stopped by our Memory Cafe, hosted by Eskaton Village Roseville, to observe and speak with attendees. Eskaton's Director of Partnerships, Cynthia Driver, spoke to Spectrum News about the importance for Memory Cafes and how these support groups help people dealing with cognitive change.

Eskaton is proud to be a sponsor of this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s, supporting the Alzheimer's Association in their mission to end this devastating disease. 💜 Throughout the summer, our Eskaton communities came together to host several fundraisers, raising both money and awareness in the fight against Alzheimer’s.

During today’s event, Team Eskaton volunteered at the registration booths and warmly welcomed attendees as they arrived at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the world's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support and research. Together, we walk for hope, for our loved ones, and for a cure.

Earlier this month, Eskaton Land Park came together for their annual Car Wash & Bake Sale Fundraiser in support of the Alzheimer's Association 💜🚗🍪. This event is part of a larger, organization-wide effort where our various Eskaton communities are hosting creative fundraisers with the goal of contributing one unified gift in honor of older adults living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

We are proud to join together as an organization for this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday, September 27, standing side by side with families, friends, and advocates in the fight to end Alzheimer’s. 💜

Two weeks ago, Team Eskaton joined communities across the nation in celebrating National Assisted Living Week, and what an "Ageless Adventure" it was!

Our Eskaton Village Placerville community celebrated with their very own Spirit Week, bringing smiles and laughter with themed activities such as Crazy Hat Day, Dress Alike Day, Favorite Sports Team Day, and Hawaiian Shirt Day. 🎩👯‍♂️🏈🌺

A heartfelt thank you to our wonderful partners for celebrating with us and helping make the week so memorable: Applied Home Healthcare, First Call Hospice, Interim Healthcare, Monarch Hospice, Rx Healthcare, and Snowline Hospice. 💜

🍂 On this National Centenarian’s Day (and the first day of Fall), we’re reflecting on the joy and gratitude we felt at last Friday’s Celebration of Longevity Luncheon. The afternoon was dedicated to honoring our residents whose remarkable lives embody resilience, purpose, and the wisdom shaped over generations.

We are deeply thankful to everyone who joined us in celebration and in support of the Eskaton Foundation. To our residents, families and friends, volunteers, business partners, and donors: your generosity helps provide life-enriching services and financial assistance to older adults across our Eskaton communities. This fundraising event would not have been possible without the incredible heart and dedication of Team Eskaton whose support made the day truly special.

A very special thank you to Tony Lopez for being our event MC and to Remy Gross of the Buck Institute for his insightful keynote presentation.

We're grateful for the generous contributions made be each of our sponsors: Abbey Flooring, Air Systems, CalPro Construction and Painting, CCL Hospitality Group, Diepenbrock-Chapman Investment Consulting Group, Direct Supply, FTP Mechanical, iHeart Media, KCRA 3, Liberty Insurance, Lou Vismara, Mission Linen Supply, Optima Healthcare, PharMerica, SafelyYou, Sandra & John Stouffer, US Bank, West Coast Fire & Water, Ziegler

Here’s to honoring longevity and the power of community!
